1 nanday conure Black Jack, 1 Brotogeris parakeet Whiff, 1 ring neck dove Eliza, and 6 society finches (3 are tame). RIP my parent pairs of societies and my little gouldian finches
yesterday, the day after my beloved cat Number 5 died, my sweet little finch Bonnie died. I was up late on the computer and i heard strange peeping coming from the cage. When i looked, she was limp on the cage floor. a half an hour ago, she was alive and peeping when i blew her a kiss goodnight. She died completely out of nowhere! This was so sudden and sent me over the edge. When Number 5 died, I didn't want to become a wreck crying nonstop like when maxie died so i blocked it out and sorta numbed my self. When Bonnie died, i couldn't stop crying, i felt it was my fault. I should have responded to the chirps quicker, or clipped her nails so she could stand more easily, or changed her water sooner. In the back of my mind I know its not my fault, but i guess that's just ow i'm reacting. I had been meaning to get her looked at because on her back, there was a patch of feathers growing sideways and they looked thinner than the rest, and she had been sleeping allot. Bonnie was the sweetest finch in the world, sometimes the other finches picked on her and she often slept alone. However, she was often courted by bumble (who was half her size) who she often told off. Sometimes i sang to her to help her sleep because she had trouble roosting and finding a perch, and once she landed on my arm when i was cleaning her cage and she couldn't see. I feel we had something special (i still love all my birds the same though), and if we had more time, it would have been something beautiful. There is something about Lady Gouldian finches, they are so sweet, majestic, loyal, and full of personality. While they are more reserved, there is nothing like the bond between them and their owner. Bonnie but the lady in Lady Gouldian finch and will be sorely missed. RIP Bonnie.

I am so so sorry for all your losses, I feel your pain. You have been through so much lately.
Please always remember when a bird begins to sleep at lot, there is definitely something wrong.
Do not blame yourself, perhaps even having it seen to could have had the same results.

Be strong, my thoughts and prayers are with you

thank you Antoinette. i was worried about her sleeping habits, she seemed "off". I think i should power clean the cage so the others don't get sick.

If I were you, only a suggestion tho, have all the birds taken to the vet and seem to. I realize this could be costly, but rather be safe than sorry.
The reason I am suggesting the above, is you do not know the cause of Bonnie's death.

Be strong, we are all here for you :grey:

thank you, i would take them to the vet, but Number 5's vet bill took quite a chunk out of my parents wallet so we cant afford to. However, the man at our local pet store has helped before. he gave my finch air sac mite med's, removed my geckos cataracts, and more all for free, so i will take them to him. BTW does anyone know why the feathers on her back grew in sideways, it was really strange and worries me.

Glad the guy at the pet store is able to assist you.
I was surfing the net now, found nothing pertaining to why feathers on a birds back grow in sideways.

Below is what I found....

As an avian vet i have diagnosed my bird with deglamatia (feathers that grow due to wrong preening, sideways etc.) but i would like to hear from somebody else. his feathers grow curvey and they are all out of place

I have attached the link, perhaps try corresponding with him, you may get some answers.

thank you guys so much. This forum is great and always there for each other! I thoroughly cleaned their dishes, and tomorrow I'll do the cage. I have also found a great home for Oscar where he will be well cared for and is going to be a breeder bird. He had so many issues that i really think this is the best way of going. The breeder is very knowledgeable, experienced, and takes excellent care of his birds, so Oscar is in good hands. I was really down do i went to play with the parrots, one picked me and an half an hour later I reserved a little nanday conure! I still really miss Bonnie, Number 5, and Oscar, but things are looking up. I will always love and miss them.

i just found out my toad died too :(. Mr. Toad was a firebelly toad who was enjoyed bathing, sleeping, and eating, the perfect toad life. RIP Mr. Toad, say hi to leppy and chubble, Number 5, and Bonnie at the rainbow bridge.

Could Mr Toad and Bonnie's death's be linked?

I am so sorry for your loss. *Hugs*

Why you shouldn't be devasted by their goodbyes.

:):):) I think you have had enough of :( . :09: :p
(But trust me somtimes a little--LOT of tears help. You kind of run out of things to cry about in the end, which is when it is easier to move on)
Oh!
No worries ann, I just know it will all be okay in the end. The good always die young. I think it is important to know that they are not in pain anymore, and that they are possobly in a place so peaceful, lifetimes of searching Earth for such a place would be in vain.

As for the disease, I do not know, was this an old bird? I guess with old age comes some old brittle feathers. It could also be lack of iodine which causes breathing and molting, infertility, and all this other bad stuff in finches, especially Gouldians.
Common Diseases of Finches

As for Mr.Toad frogs can only live so long. But about your Gouldian, what a nice way to leave the world. Have a caring voice carry it off into the night, and as it closes it's eyes, it is droops off in a deeper, yet ever more undisturbed sleep.

I think more than anything it is important to move on and not just brood over what is lost. I think it would only be fair to one day when you feel low make a scrap book of all those who were lost. Any pictures, feathers, fav. toys, their own quotes.

It seems you may have a little epidemic going on in your house. I am reading a book about an epidemic right now and as it says,
"There is a season for everything." (from Fever) I feel that is self-explanitory.

I have to a project on that quote, and I may have just found my inspiration. Ann, seeing people as I live life, I wold always feel like I am made of paper, haha not even worthy of glass. Flowing along the wind. Ripped by death, burnt by insults. But, ann you must be made of something else. You stand tall and strong throgh this ordeal that I am sure will end soon.

I sound like a physciatrist, but I do not want to be, justwant to help you in any way I can. If you need any help researching please let me know.

Sorry if this message bothers anyone, just trying to help out...

EDIT: Sorry, but I too think this is all to close for a coincidence. Just get your birds checked and see the diesease, if found, and then you should be able to track it back. Maybe it is in the veggies or fruits?

thank you so much Sarah, and for the smileys :). I will definitely get the finches checked out. the scrap book is a wonderful idea that i will definitely use. I dont think all their deaths are linked, the cat had a urinary blockage which is not contagious, and the birds and toad were on different floors. but the finches need to be looked at for sure. I almost lost another finch today, he must have had an Angel watching him because i caught it before he was injured. his foot was stuck in the nest and he was flapping upside down and couldn't escape. i reached in and untangled his foot and he was fine. I think the worst is over now, everyone is healthy. I even found a new bird :). I went to the pet store to give Oscar up. the owner is a breeder and will use him as a breeder. a rescue also thinks we were sold a breeder bird, so Oscar will be doing what nature intended. He takes excellent care of them, and really cares. Now Oscar can provide families with little conure babies, and i can visit his offspring at the store :). When i went to the bird room to look for a new bird, 4 just weaned nanday conures were out and about and 3 came over to play with me. I picked one an went to tell the the owner i picked one to reserve, and all but one of them, including the one i picked, were back in their cage. The little guy who was still out came over after some coaxing. He turned out to be the sweetest, cuddliest, most easygoing, gentlest little bird i had ever met. I carried him to the counter to reserve him, he was NOT happy to leave his cage and i had to pick him up which he wasnt very happy about. my finger was right in chomping range the whole time and not once did he try to bite me. I reserved him and he wont be sold until i get the money :). Things are looking up, Oscar is in a new happy home (and soon to be married ;) ), Number 5 is pain free and with his brother, Bonnie is flying free with Beeper, Mr. Toad is hopping along with lepi and chubble, and i have a new bird on the way. They will be missed, but im glad they are all peace full and happy now.

next time i visit I'll take some pictures :)

I'm sorry for your losses. When it rains, it pours!

I'm still a mess after Puck died, and it's been almost a month. Some other stuff is going on also, which just makes everything worse.
