I did it! I found a store today that sells most of the fun and interesting grains I've read about here :)

Look at my stash! Buckwheat, chia seeds, quinoi, dehusked millet, hemp seeds, three bean mix...There were others but I couldn't remember what else I've read about.

Now...can you tell me what the blazes I am to do to prepare it for my fids?

I am particularly stumped by the buckwheat triangles (!), the chia seeds and the hemp seeds. BTW, my mom was totally scandalised when we got to the checkout and she saw I had "drugs" (the hemp seeds) in my basket! LOL!!

Off to do some searches...:p

Percy's night time mash is almost finished so I found this stuff at just the right time :D

YAY! Percy is going to be a very happy boy (just hopefully in the right way, how could you encourage Percy to use "drugs" lol:09:).

Kiwi's grain mix comes mixed, so I just put about 1/3 cup of the mix in a small pot (it does fluff up!), add water and cook it up on low/medium heat. For some god unknown reason, it takes about an hour and a half to even start getting soft, 2 hours to be mushy the way he likes. I have to add more water mid-way through because it evaporates. Once it's cooled just a bit, I pour it in a strainer and rise it in the sink. I keep it stored in the fridge, and it lasts him about 5 days. Since it is more filling than dry food, he gets a heaping spoonful 2x a day. It is a good portion of this kind of food for an amazon, and leaves lots of room in their dish for fruit/veg or birdie bread:) Since mine is a picky butt, I allow it to get to room temperature on the counter for 10/15 minutes because someone doesn't like cold food out of the fridge;)

IF I were you and purchased all these separately, I would probably just mix em all together in an airtight canister so I could scoop out as needed when I cook. However, you could probably work out how much you want too cook in a batch, then how much total dry mix you need, then how many tbsp that equates too and how many tbsp of each grain you wanted to add and then start cooking the one with the longest cook time first, and add the others at timed intervals......:52: Or just mix them together:09: Let us know how Percy likes it!

I love it when things like that happen!

I think you have beens there?.....you have to soak those for 24 hours, just in a pot of water before cooking.

when you cook the rest, it can last up to 3 days in the fridge in an air tight container.

have fun preparing, the 'drugs' haha, I had to laugh at that :)
I'm not sure if you can serve that raw, or cook it...maybe someone else knows.

Perhaps that is why Kiwi's food takes so darn long to cook:11:! I've been making it the same way for years. I never knew you were suppose to soak it first:30:. I cook a lot of grains (for our meals) regularly and they don't take any time at all to cook. The ones in his mix are always mush by the time the corn and beans get soft. Except refried, we don't really eat beans, therefore I have never cooked dry ones (except what in in his food mix) so I guess I learned something new today:D

Hemp seeds used to be a favorite training/treat for our grey bird. We never cooked it. Bought some at a canary/finch show awhile back and my current bunch won't touch it.

We feed some hemp hearts every now in their birdie bread, and sometimes just mixed in their food.
I have been wanting to try chia seeds as well, and it sounded like from the searches I had done that you don't cook those either:)

Great find, Michelle!

I've got a funny for all of you, talking about grains and all....

Each time I go looking for Quinoa, the store employees look at me funny and tell me they don't have it, which always leaves me kind of flustered, because they really SHOULD have it. Come to find out I completely butchered the pronunciation of the word. No wonder they all looked at me all bug-eyed, and kept asking "WHAT?" :54:

LOL Wendy!! I'm sure I mutilate it too! ;)

Thanks for the input everyone. I did at least know that the beans need to be soaked...but only because my mom told me! :54:

In addition to your input, I've learned from my searches-

The 'whole' (unhulled) buckwheat I bought is a no-go. :( I need the hulled kind. So I will be exchanging those tomorrow.

The chia seeds can be soaked in water, which causes them to make a jelly..?? Huh? Or sprinkled over food raw. Still researching that one ;)

I've not gotten to the hemp seeds yet. You say it can be fed just like that, raw and dry, Thekarens?

Can't wait to start soaking and cooking! :)

My boss puts chia seeds in her homemade lemonade. They do thicken it up with their jelly & they expand in a way. A tablespoon turns into more of a 1/4 cup.

You can sprout hemp seeds! You can actually try them too, they have a kinda nutty taste. I buy hemp seeds and put them thru a grinder (nutribullet or coffee grinder) and add them to my veggie/fruit bullet drinks. Same with flax, I grind it up so there are not little chunks of it in the drinks. Flax do not sprout like normal seeds, so if you're gonna try sprouting, skip the flax!!

Ivory loves the ground up hemp seeds. Even ground up, it is kinda clumpy, so you can easily press together a little pea size ball :)

i didn't know you could soak chia seeds:eek:
I use it in their cookies raw and on our food as well.
I soo got to try that now,a whole series of birdy jellys!!!!!!!!!!!:D
