Blueberry? Cherry? Apple?

Haha, no but seriously. Today I went and talked with a few people who've raised Pionus from babies, and got their two cents about them. General consensus was that the 'Blue-Headed' was the best one to get, by far.

Me: "Okay...well...they're nice, but what about Bronze-wing?" (What I've been favoring)

Them: "Eh, you're better off with a Blue Headed."

*sigh* I mean, don't get me wrong. I think all the difference types are nice, but has anyone had/experienced the BW? I feel like I'm going to get an eventual raving lunatic if I buy one. :/ haha

I like blueberry myself.

Sorry, that isn't helpful.

Did they tell you why they don't recommend the Bronze Wing?

I think she may have had a bad experience with one. I guess it all comes down to their individual personalities though. :P

This site helped me a lot so you could take a look at what it says about the different personalities. Pionus Parrot's Website. Also I got a book off Ebay called The Pionus Parrot for a couple bucks. If you want you can just go there and type Pionus into the search engine and grab a used copy.

I went on looks lol. I chose the pionus for the traits and such but when it came down to what type of pionus I just really loved the look of the white capped and the bronze winged so I went looking for one and found some white capped babies right away.

I know the blue is considered the beauty of the group and its pretty but with anything else it comes down to what is beautiful to you. I am an earth tones person anyway so all the greens and browns really appealed to me. Plus I liked the horn colored beak :)

I'm partial to blackberry myself.. lol

As for which bird to choose, I'm afraid I'm not much help either. I would probably have a hard time choosing, everybirdie is beautiful! :)

I have a Blue Headed and a Dusky. The Blue Headed is the most beautiful, however, when she wants something, she has that high piercing call that i understand is typical of the Blue Headed. The Dusky's colors are more subdued, but in the sun, they come to life with blues and greens and red/purple and she is very QUIET. She doesn't call out like the other one and is content to be hanging out wherever.....Granted it could be their individual personalities, I hope someone else will come forward with their Pionus experience.

PS: For me it's Pecan Pie LOL

I think if you really like the Bronze Wing, you should get one. When you love an animal you deal with it's quirks. Some of Merlin's high pitched imitations used to grate on my eardrums at first and now they barely register with me. And Rowdy's obnoxious Nanday screeches that almost everyone hates don't bother in the least.

I think the Blue Headed Pionus are beautiful and from what people tell me they are the most gentle ones of the Pionus family... but this is only what ive been told and dont know how true this is, but if you had your herat set on the Bronze Wing, then I would say stick with your 1st choice :)

I was dreaming about Pionus Maximilian for a long time BUT couldn't find breeder with baby or baby on the way for a long time . i did find breeder with Blue Head and want to see her .... she is amazing and we all love her very much.

do you know of breeder who have bronze ?
if you do and you can check with him that would be good start. It means that it was meant to be.

Well what exactly do you like about the bronze-wing? No one should choose a bird based on looks alone, and just like humans personality is what matters the most when you are looking for a companion... I cannot speak from experience on other Pi's but my blue-headed is the sweetest, quietest, funniest, most lovable bird I have ever owned. It is awesome to watch him learning more each day and he has become quite the talker! He is molting right now going from green/red on his head to a bright royal blue. He also likes to cuddle and be touched, which I understand is not usually typical for a pionus. Hope you find a wonderful bird and make a sound, educated decision.

Thank you very much. I have realized lately that I was looking more at appearances rather than personality. I am glad to hear that your BH is a wonderful companion. I don't want to get something I'll regret, and you're not the first to tell me theyre the sweetest. :)

Again, I appreciate your advice. :)

I have to say that my BH is more cuddly that the Dusky.

i've only had a bronze winged, but i must say she is the most docile sweetest bird i have ever owned, and she is very active and playful, and a good talker and very smart. i've had her a year and she is awesome and beautiful
