Parrots
B&G Macaw, Galah, 5 cockatiels, 50 billion and a half budgies. We breed and do rescue. Too many to list each individual's name and age etc, but they are each individuals and loved dearly.
Any good suggestions for where to get toys, etc for our new B&G? The nearest petshop(worth mentioning. There is a parrot shop a few counties over, but I see a lot of red flags. They seem to mostly be hand feeding and selling babies of many types at all times of year. Quite concerning. No older birds or supplies that I saw online.) is a petcosmart an hour away. And they don't exactly have a lot of mac supplies.

Anything ordered online has to be delivered to our PO box, so must ship through USPS. We have a friend out here who has a normal street address, so we keep meaning to ask about having the occasional package delivered there but have not yet with everything else going on.

We know about the hardware store for lumber, the kid store for some safe baby toys, the grocery store for food dye, the forest for branches, etc. Would love to hear other non-traditional places to check out, or online sources that are trusted(and ideally ship USPS).

My personal favorite is My Safe Bird Store. Their customer service is excellent!

Mysafebirdstore is my go-to place for the little guys, but I didn't really notice much for the big'un. But the last time I checked was pre:adoption, so now that I know the bird's play style a little better maybe I will think differently about what they have in the right size.

And yeah, their customer service is absolutely beyond great. Last order I placed around a month ago, had it delivered to my mom's place in Maryland due to the PO box issue. My mom drove it here when she came to visit, and upon opening the box I realized they sent the wrong harrisons. I emailed and immediately got a response, and they said they would send out the 2 proper bags and a shipping label to return the other two. I explained there may be a delay since my mom would have to forward the mail via usps to us here in Kentucky. Next thing I knew the box arrived. Here in Kentucky. Directly.

Every experience I have had with them has been super positive.

Bonka Bird Toys has a good selection they're based in Florida I believe but ship internationally though I'm not sure about USPS. My (small) birds like all the toys I've gotten from them but I see they also have a selection for the big guys.

I have a blue throat macaw, grey and Senegal and get everything for them there toy wise. I just search by large and medium bird toys. I got a toy for Zoe that arrived yesterday that was too heavy to hang by myself and easily 2.5 feet long. They might not have stuff for a hyacinth, but definitely a B&G [emoji4]

Well actually to be honest now that I think about it, I think I have never looked at the finished product toys on MSBS. I tend to order (lots of) toy parts, cheap harrisons, and good treats. But hey, I'll check out some of the completed stuff. Freedom goes through toys faster than I can make them sometimes lol

Bonka bird has this toy line with large plastic balls. Every time I get a lead on where to get one the toy disappears again lol. It comes highly reccommended. I'll be sure to check out what other stuff they have too!

The hardware store lumber is NOT safe for birds. It is pressure blasted and treated for insects etc. Lumber specifically is not safe for birds, although certain types of dowel rods etc are.

If you can get a few steel toy starters, you can make your own if you buy in bulk from places like MySafeBirdStore

Lumber comes in both treated and untreated forms. :) Many places state that untreated lumber is fine.

I believe that the concern with unfinished lumber, which is not treated, being problematic is that lumber being shipped into North America primarily from Asia, which is chemical and heat treated prior to shipping. North American untreated white pine is a great safe source for Parrot Toys.

In your corner of the World there is a fair number of craft shops that build any number of products from locally sourced woods. Oppps, happen even in craft shops and you could be a reasonable source for theirs.

Ooooh, that's a great idea, and gives me another one. There is a strong Amish population out here and they do a lot with furniture making, etc. I bet they have scraps of local untreated wood they would be happy to sell.

So very true, as your only Winter competition is the wood burner used to keep the place warm. This time of year, you and maybe a couple of other like individuals! Have fun!

FYI: Have Photos available! Your Parrots will likely swing a deal your way!

Be careful. We've only ordered one toy from Bonka (through Amazon) and Arika had the sharp metal wire exposed in 1 hour. It was a boing toy and the plastic caps were flimsily attached with hot melt glue. Basically all boing toys should be used with supervision and be made of sisal rope instead of synthetic or cotton.

Fortunately she was not injured.

The rope was trimmed and recycled. That's about all we got out of that one.

We've had good luck ordering very large Macaw toys from MD Bird Farm in Delaware. That's where we got Arika and they've always had a good selection. One of the best toys that she's had since we got her (but we've been repairing / maintaining it on a regular basis) is her large stringy braid with soft and hard woods, leather strings, and large knots.

Its the monstrosity on the left.

She also loves playing with her flex rubber wiffle ball. Picked it up at Pets Smart for a few dollars and they come in different sizes.

Hope that helps.

I've recently used Parrot Wizard and BeMore Bird Supplies, Parrot wizzard responded to an e-mail within a few minutes, so no doubt you'll be able to explain the shipping issue and easily resolve that problem, and Michael had some interesting toys and puzzles, and BeMore Bird supplies had a chat window on his web site, and he built me an 18" sq PVC Cube that hangs by a chain, that has the cargo looking "Hemp Rope" tied through all 6 sides, a very interesting swinging toy very appropriately sized for Macaws and Large Parrots, and many other toys on his web site, Parrot Wizzard actually has a 50% off toys going on, I think it's still going on for Large Birds, he personally has a couple Macaws, you maybe interested in taking a look at both of those, besides the normal places. Just thinking out of the box, but the puzzles were very interesting, along with really nice foraging towers that you can add too to increase difficulty. Hope that helps.

I have also had very good experiences with ParrotWizard-- very responsive, very willing to work with his customers!!! He made a custom-perch for me outside of the parameters of customization listed on the website and he responded to my emails same-day as well.

I buy a lot for mine on Amazon, but the risk there is that some of those items are made in China and that isn't necessarily the safest route. One of my bird's favorite toys was made in China and it stinks because I probably won't get her another one knowing this.

I have never bought from these people, but they seem legitimate and when I called, they told me that all of their bird supplies are constructed/ stored in a warehouse separate from their family birds. They also no longer attend bird shows, so that reduces the risk of contamination as well.
