hello, i have, sorry i had 13 cockatiels before two days one died, today one of my tiels the most active is sleeping all day. there are no avian vets in cyprus where i live, whatever happens i cannot do anything, i'm very anxious and i'm thinking that my birds would be better with someone else, i love them it hurts me so much but .. i don't know. i don't have someone i know to give them, i would give them to a stranger, i don't know what else to do. i take care them by myself, i live alone just with them, and now i'm in this position.. please help me, you all have birds, yoou all love them, i don't have no one else to turn to. apologize for my english.

I'm dearly sorry about your situation, if I lived where you did, I'd take him. I hope that you can find an avian veteranarian over there, I can't believe that there wouldn't be any at all. That seems strange to me.

May all go well with you and the birds...

It stinks that you don't have an avian vet availible to you, however if you enjoy your parrots and this is the only reason you're giving them up. Personally I would keep them. Research Research Research common illnesses online. Quarinteen them all to watch for signs of illnesses and isolate sick birds. Do your best and become your own "avian vet tech". I would not reccomend this in any case when an avian vet is availible, but in your case don't be hard on yourself if you lose some. I'm not saying don't grieve. That's A ok and perfectly natural, but know that you did all you could, and learn from the experience. Just my two cents :)

Have they been to a vet at all? Finding an avian certified vet is always the best choice - but many vets know a lot about birds without becoming officially certified. The two vets I've brought Auggie to the most were neither avian certified.

I would not recommend going to a normal vet as we had to do. There are no avian vets near me either. I was taking my budgie in and the lady at the counter asked if it was a cockatiel! She couldn't tell if it was male or female either. THankfully, my bird came out alive but died from kidney failures soon after. She had many medical conditions and I couldn't take her to the vet as they didn't know anything!

In the meantime try and isolate the birds that are sick and keep the cages and areas clean, clean, clean. I use a disinfectant which is non-toxic to birds and disinfect daily to ensure that my parrot's area is clean. Are there any draughts? Are the birds area warm enough? What diet are you feeding them? If you have them in an aviary outside, bring the sicks ones inside and when I say isolate, I mean keep the sick ones not only apart from the rest but from eachother. There must be farmers in your area who breed chickens or any farmer with livestock because you can then ask them who they get out to help their animals when they get sick. There are many cats in Greece who roam the streets arent there? People use donkeys as well. Someone must be in charge of the animal rescue or some group who keep an eye on them, they would know who can doctor your birds for you. Any vet has anitbiotics that can be suitable for birds. People own animals in your area so there must be someone who comes into the town to medicate their animals. Record the symptoms of the birds so that you can explain to a vet how they look. I might be wrong but in remote areas the district council usually asigns a vet to each area. Let us know what you find!
