i am the mom of three parrots:
Dorothy- African grey (cag)
Bowie- blue and gold macaw
Nellie- hyacinth macaw
Reggie- hyacinth macaw
Marnie- white bellied caique
I am about to order a carrier for my soon to be home greenwing baby. I am wondering at what age are they full grown.

Most parrots are full size at weaning... They might grow a bit more, but not much...

I looked to make sure, it's "average" is about 1 1/2 years, GW's take a pretty long time to wean. Rea's over a year now, but I don't think she's done growing.

My Neleno stopped growing at approx year and 1/2. My Neleno is on the very large size when it comes to GWs. Joe

Your gorgeous greenwing is so gorgeous and huge. I wish you would post your avatar picture so we could make it larger to see the proportion of Neleno next to you. Your bird as well as wharfrats are so big and beautiful. I guess I'm just wondering what to do. I weighed Moses at 3 mos. and he was 1210 grams. I'm not sure if he is going to get alot bigger other than his tail. I need to get a travel cage to bring him home in.

This is Rea almost exactly a year ago. (9/16/11) So basically @ 3 mos. old

Look how gorgeous she is! It's too bad all of us don't live closer, would love to see everyones birds in person! Wharfrat, what do you use to transport Rea?

Well, all this talk about weight got me thinking. I'm wondering if Salsa is eating too much each day. I've been considering this possibility for a while, because he always seems to be eating - well, not 'always', but he eats lots more food on a more frequent basis than my others.

This morning when Salsa woke up, I weighed him. His weight was 1515 grams! When I weighed him on a full crop yesterday he weighed 1553 grams!! About a month ago or so his empty crop weight was in the 1490's. Right now he outweighs Zaf by about 100 grams!

What Salsa eats is nutritional but he's always sucking down the food (he plays with it a lot in his water but he always eats what seems to me like mass quantities of it). This bird has a HUGE appetite...it may just be time for him to lose a few grams ;) I suppose I can always haul him to my vet and get his opinion on the matter. I'll probably try adjusting his food schedule a bit first, though.

Here are a few phone-cam pics I snapped of Sals a few minutes ago (eating, as usual...haha)...

I'm no expert but isn't that weight within the range of a greenwing? I think he is so handsome (but then I might be biased, I am in love with Salsa!) I love the pictures you took of him eating!

It's not so much the weight as it is the fact that he seems to be gaining. He's well past his growth stage. Gaining is usually better than losing when it comes to these guys, though.

Thanks for the kind words :)

Up , UP , and away WharfRat and Rea :p
With the roof in the backround , and the way your holding onto Rea , it looks like she is lifting you into the clouds , lololol.

Hold on WharfRat !! :11::11::11:

I purchased a Grey hound plastic carrier from Petsmart, it was the largest they sell. I drilled 4 holes into the side of the carrier, 2 holes for water bowls, 2 for perches. It takes the entire space inside my car and the rear seating. It works perfect, it keeps my GW safe, large enough so my GW does not feel closed in and he enjoys being inside of it as he knows we are taking a trip somewhere and my boy loves to travel.
The upper side of the carrier have many holes and cut outs so there is plenty of air flow. It has a very large door so it's easy to place the GW inside and to remove him. i have to figure out how to post more pictures of him so you can judge for yourself on his size. I know he is just over 1700 grams. Best of luck Joe

Joe: In the advanced message window at its top row of buttons there's a button just to the right of the yellow smileys button. It looks kinda like a gray-ish file folder with an "A" on it. If you click on that button, it will bring up a "Manage Attachments" window that has a "Browse" button and an "Upload" button within it. They are the top-most buttons there. Click the "Browse" button and then navigate to wherever your pictures are on your computer's hard drive. Highlight the image file you want to upload and then click the upload button. You can do that over again for each picture you want to attach to your post.

I hope that helps. It would be nice to see your photos of Neleno.

I beleive this may have worked, If it did, this is Neleno standing in front of a 65 inch Flat Screen T.V Fingers crossed. Thanks Joe
