What's the ettiquette of this "Thanking" thing?

I just noticed that there is a mechanism on this board to add Thank-yous, presumably for useful posts. I have been on a lot of forums (fora?) but have not seen this before. Is there a description of the proper usage of it somewhere? Or is it kind of like "like" on Facebook?
 
Yup, I think that's it. Otherwise, I've been using it wrong too. :D
 
I use it for post i agree with,if you find the answer let me know.
 
Thank you...... plain and simple, basically saying thank you for the posting, advise given or paying someone a compliment, so to speak

Only thing i can think of is like or am I missing something

Yep, it's kind of the same thing as a facebook "like"
