As many of you know, the past couple of days have been scary ones for me. Being a relatively new parront, I'm not quite emotionally equipped for things I haven't encountered before. I do my best by searching and reading previous threads on topics, but when it really counts, I'm so glad that there are people out there ready to offer support and advice 'in the moment'. Bellas impaling and Gerry's broken bloodfeather were both very scary events for me (and them) and it is only because of this fine community of dedicated people that I was able to keep a level head, calm myself down, and remain positive during these events.
When Bella had her accident, all the things I'd read about 'being prepared' was suddenly very relevant and very real! Seconds do count! I also noted that after ensuring she had an avian vet to see, and after the offending objects had been removed from my birds cages, the first thing I thought of was all the parrotforums people, and I made sure I let you all know what had happened.
Accidents definitely do happen, and double and triple checking things should be normal. Just because something is sold as being designed for birds - does not mean it is safe. Sharing knowledge and experience is what helps us keep our birds safe. I feel terrible for not having realised the potential danger of the thin quicklinks with larger birds, I hadn't realised that that my baby could unscrew them (she hadn't before.) I learnt the hard way. But hopefully talking about this event might have helped to save a bird from a terrible fate. So I am glad I shared.
I know I keep saying "thanks". The word alone looks rather weak upon reflection, but I want you all to know just how much I really appreciate all the support and advice - especially with me being the antisocial hermit that I am. I don't really have a 'real world' support network for when things like this happen, so having you guys to lean on and learn from in times of need brings great relief and comfort.
Thank you everyone for being so great xxx
I can't even comprehend how many birds (and people) have been both directly and indirectly helped by the parrotforums... but I bet it's a big'ol number!
Maybe you could share your feelings about how parrotforums people have helped you and your fid(s)?
