So, for annual checkups and other things, I know this vet place; they say they take in exotics more than your usual cat or dog, but aren't specifically avian. Can I take him THERE?
An exotics vet will not necessarily be a specialist in birds, and may miss things that an avian vet will pick up on. I would lean toward an avian vet if you have one that you can go to - even for the routine things. If an avian vet isn’t an option, some vets will have an avian that they can consult with remotely. https://www.aav.org/page/FindAVet2/Find-A-Vet-Search.htm This is the link that I used to find an avian vet. Unfortunately my closest is a couple hours away so it’s an expedition every time we go . I also phoned around locally to find a local vet that has an avian contact that they can use (in case of emergency).
Exotics in a pinch, but absolutely avian if you want the best for your bird and it is an option.
Exotics are sometimes the only option but they don't have the same training or equipment at all.
I had to take Noodles to an exotics vet for maintenance for a few years because the closest avian vet was 5 hours away-- but in an emergency, I would have driven it and if I had the choice, I would have driven up to 1.5-2 hours ( 1 way) just for maintenance with an avian vet...I currently have to drive about 45 minutes to one...which is way better than 5 and he knows SO much more than the exotics vets I saw in the past...and not all of them were bad, but some really were.
