So I got a great deal on a travel cage for Charlie. When we go out of town she stays at friends house and the cage I had be using was kinda crappy. So today I got a new to us cage that is 28 by 22 by 33 not including stand. Now I'm thinking about using it for her regular cage and taking the one she stays in now to use as the travel cage. Her current cage is 32 by 21.5 by 35 so not a huge difference. The reason I am thinking of changing cages is because her current cage has a rounded top vs flat on the new one. She spend quite a bit of time on the top of her cage. The new one has wheels and the latch on her current one is broken so we have to chain it shut. Also for those that don't know Charlie is a special needs bird that is missing some toes and a wing. So she really doesn't use the whole cage anyway...can anyone think of any reason not to switch that maybe I am overlooking?

Due to her handicapped status I would do the change! :)

I think if she likes the new cage better, no reason not to switch! The bigger the better may be a rule of thumb, but naturally there are going to be exceptions to every rule. The most important thing is the happiness of the bird. My moms 2 zons refuse to go near any other cage besides the ones they came with (which they have lived in for 40 years, and are WAY small by todays standards). They are very happy in the homes they've known their entire lives. Sounds like Charlie will get more use out of the new cage anyways given it's design and her special needs, even if it is a couple inches smaller:) Remember, it is more important she likes her home.

I change up cages on a regular basis. Some zons ,like jake , prefer smaller cages. Put the new cage next to the old one and see what happens. If it works out , you know she be happy in her travel cage.

She is currently sitting on the new cage. The only issue so far is that she can't seem to figure out how to get into the new cage.

It wouldn't be the first time she has spent the night on top of her cage.
