I everyone just got our little girl a week ago just wondering if anyone can tell me what sub species she is???
Any feedback would be great :)

If you are in the states it is really hard to find pure eclectus unfortunately for the longest time breeders just thought male=green female=red and didn't look at the subspecies at all. It is a little easier with Solomon because of the smaller size and clear blue eye ring on the female but even with them it is not 100% If I was forced to make a guess, your girl is young, I would say Red Sided with maybe some Vos somewhere in her line though not necessarily one of her actual parents, could be a Vos grandparent. What did the breeder tell you?

Her bib where it goes from red to bluish purple is a clear bib, in the Solomon and Red Sided that is how it goes, where as in a Vos the purple is much lighter more true purple and it is a blend instead of a clear bib. A Vos also has some bright yellow on the underside of the tail yours is not bright but is present. There is no real clear eye ring, if she is is red sided she may develop a lighter one but if she was Solomon even at this age the blue ring would be very distinct. Yes, it is confusing especially when you are looking at one and not others next to each other as size can help, it is even harder to tell subspecies in the males.

thanks for the feedback I am living in Australia and we were told she was Solomon island but her tail doesn't match one of a Solomon island??

Hello fellow Aussie!

She's definitely not a Solomon Island. And definitely not pure red sided. Like labell said, it would seem she is a mix. Seems like she definitely has some Vosmaeri genetics.

Also her head shape does not look anything like the Red-sided or Solomon Island Eclectus I've owned/seen/had experience with. Did you get her from a breeder?

Very cute girl nevertheless! :)

What a cute little girl regardless of what species she is. I have a Solomon Isl. male but he's very big and has a spot of yellow on one wing so most likely a mix even though I did get him from a breeder. But...he's so awesome it doesn't matter to me...especially as I'm not breeding. I'm so excited for you!!!!

The tail on a Solomon is shorter and more squared off at the bottom than rounded. In addition she should have the very blue eye ring if she were pure Solomon. She is however absolutely adorable! I love food face pics of eclectus!

Hey there fellow Aussie.

Yeah we did get her from a breeder that got her from another breeder here in brisbane when she was 3 weeks old. We paid about half price & we were told she was Solomon island. we love her no matter what :):):)

She look young and that makes it difficult to Identify the sub species. When they have matured and develop their adult look and size, then it's best to try and identify them. This because as the Eclectus mature their feather colours, appearance, and tail feathers are changing until they reach adulthood. However when sub species are cross bred, it can be extremely difficult to identify. Any true sub species of Eclectus should be identifiable.

There are very few pure sub species breeders available in Australia and there is a lack of information on them as well as the lack of availability of a pure sub species. These Eclectus parrots are quite expensive, but are becoming a lot more popular to Eclectus Parrot owners. Some breeders are now starting to realise the importance of keeping sub species blood line pure through selective breeding.

I'm of the understanding that

Grand Eclectus and Vosmaeri Eclectus belong to the Purple group
Reidell’s Eclectus and Cornelia’s Eclectus belong to the Red Group
Red-sided Eclectus, Solomon Island Eclectus, Australian Eclectus, Aruensis Eclectus and Biaki Eclectus belong to the Blue group
