What parrot should I get?

Well, I've really been thinking about getting a parrot, but the problem is I'm not sure which one. I live in an apartment, so I cannot have one that is too loud. Also, I would prefer that it isn't too large of one either. Price isn't neccesarliy a problem, but I'm not looking to spend a whole lot of money (I have a lot of other pets that cost a decent amount of money to maintain). I was thinking about a conure because they are not too expensive but also are loving, but I've heard that they can be quite loud. I'm not really thinking about getting one for a few months, but I want to think ahead. Thanks for any help...

LOL Conures are VERY VERY Loud. At least all the ones i've met and have. I'd go with a cockatiel or Lover Bird. Very loving friendly small/med. sized and not expensive! =)

I agree cockatiels and love birds would be good choices. I also agree that (most) conures are very very loud - but there are exceptions. I know the green cheek for one is often said to be only loud ... not very very loud. :)

That being said I've lived with Auggie (a dusky conure - very very loud) in two apartments and it has never been a problem. Though they were pretty good buildings with thick enough walls and I keep Auggie's cage in a room that does not share a wall with a neighbor.

If the noise issue is only in reference to neighbors I think most conures could still be on the list - you wont be able to hide them if you're not supposed to have pets, but they won't likely get noise complaints. If the noise issue is a matter of your own sanity, well then conures are out... all conure owners sacrificed their sanity either just before or just after bringing the bird home. :)

LoL I agree with you 100% Auggie's Dad! My conures aren't TOO loud at least not ALL the time.. but man when they want to be loud they are LOUD!!!! OMG the sound that they make and it sounds like they are yelling at you! Man... that is annoying. lol

I recommend parrotlets. They are feisty active little birds with a ton of personality. They do not squawk and for the most part make pleasant bird sounds. They are affectionate and smart, my Sadie even does clicker training. Their small size means small poos so they are easy to clean up after. I have two of these little birds and they are my sweet babies.

I can't say; its your decision. I owned a Lovebird, theyre nice pets. They can get pretty nippy though. They need a lot of attention as well.
I'm looking into Conures and Senegals mostly right now, but if noise is an issue, you can see from reading that they are loud!
I would go to a breeder or parrot shop and spend some time with various kinds and see what you like.

I agree with the others who have replied. I have a pair of Blue Crown Conures and they are at times very loud. The idea of a small conure such as the green cheek might work. A cockatiel would be a good choice if you have never had a bird before...not too expensive and can be a very loving pet that isn't too loud. I too have had birds in an apartment and I too put them in a room that was opposite the common wall and never got one complaint. Good Luck!

"Sanity" - what is that? "Quiet" - what is that? :p

Mrs. Dot and I have been in the same apartment for 3 years now and have had Hamlet and Mac for the better part of 2 (actually, we got Hammie about 6 months after we moved in and mac a few months later... aw, I am now thinking about the night we brought her home ... *tear* in a little shoe box ... ) we have had neither a neighbor ask what the noise was, nor a noise complaint ... but again, like AD, we don't have the cages on a wall that is shared with a neighbor.

Hamlet is LOUD ... no doubt, can hear her over the vacuum (hell, I can hear her outside the building with all my windows and doors closed, but then again, I know what I am listening for) ... Mac, on the other hand, isn't nearly as loud (and I think the only reason she tries is to because of Hamlet) ... can't usually hear her over Hamlet ... but there aren't many times that they are loud during the day ... in the morning as a "flock call" and right after we get home ... but never at night are they loud ... I would say that a Green Cheeked Conure (or a Maroon Bellied Conure - same type as a GCC just different colored tails) would be great in many apartments ...

Lovebirds, Cockatiels and Budgies would make for great companions as well ... so there are plenty of options out there ...

Get a budgie! They are easy to tame and great for first time bird owners. Also they are relatively quiet except for their chirping noises. They are excellent. I do not recommend getting lovebirds because they can easily become feisty and not "love birds" anymore, even though they are relatively quiet. But budgies (Parakeets) are inexpensive and pretty easy to care for. GOOD LUCK!
