Hi, Ive owned george, my blue and gold macaw for 2 months now, hes 11 months old parent rared, and up to now i think hes progressed very quick in terms of training and taming, now it feels like ive reached a bit of a dead end and after a bit of advice and a few tips.
When i first got him, you couldnt even walk in the same room as him without him hysterically screaming, he was terrified. He started improving bit by bit, the screaming improved every day until it stopped, he started accepting me putting my hands in his cage to change his food and water, then he started taking nuts out my hand after 2 weeks of trying, then he started taking them from me when i opened the cage door and put my hand in, then he started letting my touch him, and now hes starting to show a lot more personallity, coming out of the cage on his own and likes a tickle everywhere on his body. Ive recently bought a training course from www.birdtricks.com by Chet Womach and i was very impressed by it, especially by the clicker and the stick as a training method. but it doesnt say much about teaching the bird to step up. The bird they teach looks confident and not fearful to humans whatso ever, which is probably why it was easy to train. but George is still a little bit bearful, and is not going to be that easy. if i put a hand held perch to him he wont step on if im holding it, i dont think he understands what i want him to do. and secondly, when i try to go near him when hes out the cage he just escapes from me and refuses to come anywhere near me, so i cant even put him on a T stand to train him, he just panics and flys around the house. in one particular area of his cage he had a swing, he tried to sit on it for the first time and he got a fright when it moved, and he clinged onto the cage and refused to go on it. i then attached 2 cable ties to the swing to make it a little bit more still, and he started getting on it. my intentions are to let him get used to the little bit of movement under his feet and ill slowly loosen the cable ties bit by bit untill they are gone. Baring in mind when i hold a hand held perch to his feet it wont get on it, but if i take the swing out the cage, and hold it where the swing was he will get on it, and as soon as i make the slightest movement of trying to get him out the cage on the stick he just panics and clings onto the cage again.
I think by biggest problem is not knowing what level im at, and from what progress hes made is it too early to try and make him step up? do and what else could i try to build his confidence up, to stop him panicing to a little movement under his feet, and to stop him avoiding me when hes out his cage (when ive built up his trust to touch him inside the cage he knows im no danger)
