What kind of Parrot is this?

First, I would like to say that I have no knowledge of parrots or birds other than they poop and fly.

My grandma has this parrot for about 3 years and it's a really mean parrot... It would make threat poses every time someone walks by. I would like to know what this parrot is called so I can learn more about it and why it's so mean. It attacks everyone else except my grandma and its peck actually kinda hurts. It pecked my thumb today while I was trying to reach for something above its head and it drew blood. I'm glad I don't live with my grandma. It's fun to watch it break seeds and nuts to get to the good part though.

The bird is a senegal parrot, but that has nothing to do with it being 'mean'. As many will tell you, humans are the only species that is mean on purpose. The bird isn't trying to be mean, it is reacting to a set of circumstances and/or protecting itself. If you say it doesn't bite your grandma then chances are she is the bird's person. Some birds (especially ones in single person homes) will only let one person hold them/pet them. If you'd like to build a relationship with the bird, I recommend reading to it and letting it watch you by sitting near it. Let it know you are not a threat - sit at whatever distance is safe for you. Curiosity can really get to these little guys!

Thanks!!!

Sorry, "mean" wasn't the most appropriate word here. I think the term, "aggressive" would be more fitting.
I don't think I'll be reading to a bird though haha. No offense to you parrot enthusiasts on here to go as far as that and I respect that. I only visit my grandparents on occasion maybe once every 2 weeks or so for a couple hours, my grandpa can also get close to the bird without it biting him. It's fun feeding it though. I just never really cared about birds, but I love
animals and love learning about them.

You were right about that though, I just read that these guys tend to be more of a "one person" parrot. Very interesting, I didn't know parrots can get attached like that.

I bet if you learned more about birds in general and the companion birds we share our lives with you would better understand their nature. Birds are not born aggressive or mean. People make them that way from a lack of understanding their needs.

once you get close to a bird, theres no turning back :)

but that is a beautiful senegal your granparents have, how old is it?? they can live to 25/30 yrs so maybe you getting to know it and its habits for now will be a good thing

oh an them pics are classic annoyed sene pics, but mostly posturing, as she does not know you, and feels the need to look scary, there not strictly one person parrots if they are allowed to socialize in a family setting, nut is social to all of us, but prefers my man

each time you visit, try offering itaa treat, fresh fruit not the fruit seeds! eat some yourself an keep some for her :) but i would put it near her and out of strike range to start with and always greet it, so she knows your about, after a few regular visits she'll start responding

One doesn't HAVE to read to the bird - I certainly don't read to mine lol :D BUUUT it is a good way to get them used to your voice. Some people are great conversationalists, but if I had a bird that was aggressive toward me I would need material ;). Good luck with the birdy, and it's good of you to visit your grands!

I sing & dance with mine! Pop on some Nirvana & rock out. He has started mimicking every move I make from head banging to jumping in a circle. I also sing in the shower with him. I pretty much spend my day with him on the back of my chair or riding on my head to the next room to perch on my shoulder as I go from one room to the other. We play tag also but I never win. I think he cheats with his flying and all.

Well I once raised a baby pigeon I found on my patio once, we fed it with a syringe until it developed feathers and was old enough to fly away and man was it messy... I dunno if that counts as any bird experience haha but I don't think I'll ever be doing that again. Its as bad as a baby brother!

Anyways I don't know how old this parrot is nor do I know its sex and from what I read you can't really tell unless done professionally. I have no idea what age it is either, my grandma found it fully grown 3 years ago on the streets and it was way nicer. Before I was able to hold it and feed it and it loved interacting with me, my siblings and my mom when we visited, but I noticed each occasional visit it would become more aggressive.
I usually say "Hi, how are you doing today hm?" to it when I see it, I don't know if that counts for anything haha. It doesn't really eat anything from me either. It would just lunge and bite it from my hand, thrash it left to right and toss it on the floor then hiss at me. I think it just plain out hates me.

You can actually do that with parrots!? :11:

Oh YES! Parrots are wonderful life long pets <3 I have 2 and I take them to my college football tailgates and games (no alcohol! the on campus ones!) and I take my little girl to class and they both come to work and club meetings with me all the time! My whole department loves them <3 I can put them both on the floor and they'll follow me around the building chirping and chattering away :) Bleu has gotten to the point where he'll say "HIIII!" to anyone that walks by him haha what's even better is they say hi back! all our majors know the birds and love them :) The only problem I have is when Ms. Trudy (the classic little old lady i assure you!) comes into the hall and stands with her hands on her hips and calls one of them and asks how they're doing... mom's got nothing on Ms. Trudy... she's started keeping nutriberries in her office for them! I snuggle with Lucy (a conure) on the couch and take her in the shower with me too! Bleu is still warming up to me but we'll sit on the couch and watch netflix together. We often share popcorn and peanuts :)

You should tell your friends 200 is the really cheap end for birds!

Yep, Senegal parrots are sweet as sugar one minute and then drawing blood the next. Mine is hand tame and can be handle by most every body. But that is on her terms and when she wants to. I like to refer to Senegals being the Dr. Jekyl & Mr. Hyde of the parrot world because of the sudden mode swings. But if you can tollerate this, they make great pets and are very fun just to set and watch.

I wouldn't pay that much for a bird haha but I'm not surprised at the price ;) I keep a couple of tarantulas there are some out there in the hobby that are worth as much as $500+
$500 for a spider? Ridiculous you say?

What's ridiculous is paying a million dollars for a fishing lure. Yup, they have one of those out there.
Well I guess this ends my visit here on the forums. Thanks for the help and identification on my grandma's parrot guys. This is the friendliest animal forum I've been to by far and you've gotten me interested. I might be back on here in a couple of years as I've always wanted to raise a macaw when I have my own house :)

Bye guys, see you in the near future!

Haha I do!! My friend was like "Why don't you just get a bird at Petco for like $20...." and I was like "well they're not the samee :)" hahahaha. And I always tell my friends that some pet stores sell hyacinth macaws for $13,000 (of course they have no idea what a hyacinth is) and they're like :eek::eek::eek::eek:!!!!!
