In my mystery book, I have my grey repeating a dialogue (to help solve the crime) what is the longest statement your bird has made?

I think they are fascinating!

I don't have a grey - but growing up my aunt did. Her Quincy could sing "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, You make my happy when skies are greeeeeeey." She tried with every fiber of her being to teach that bird the rest (you'll never know dear, how much I love you, please don't take my sunshine away) but could never do it. We would tease her that he likes the fact that the last word was "grey" and he really knew it, but was f**ckin with her.

I love that story, Dex. Made me smile. :)

My Grey enchants me because I swear he comes up with new words and phrases every single day, usually something hilarious. I have a smart-alec Grey with a wicked sense of humor. We have a lifetime of funny stories of stuff that bird has come up with. His longest phrase, though, would be the "This little piggy went to the market. . . " He enjoys it so much he often skips to the ". . . wee! wee! weeee! ALLLLL the way home!" Cracks me up. Probably why he repeats it so often.

I don't have a grey...but I recently adopted an Amazon ..she speaks a few words....soo awesome about you are my sunshine... Because last week I started singing it to her every day...HOPING she will want to sing part of the song someday.

I LOVE the little piggies too! Oooh I hope DeRita will want to say and sing more with me over the years.

I have a cockatiel named Charlie...he says quite a bit, but what cracks me up is he will say...such a pretty.... OR ... Sucha burrrd! But no matter how hard I've tried...he will NOT say...sucha pretty birrd!

He does say, whatcha doing? I love you. Kiss, kiss, kiss. Him a good boy, what's up Charlie? Typically... He says it all in one long sentence..."hello Charlie, whatcha doing? Him a good boy? Sucha pretty! I love you...kiss kiss kiss!". Then he makes kissing sounds and starts to whistle..."if you're happy and you know it and clucks for the "claps" :)

My Gonzo will repeat over and over when my Sydney is screaming, "Be quiet! Be quiet! Bad bird! Cover you up!" He'll also count, but tends to mix things up sometimes, instead of counting "One...two...three..four...five!" He'll go "One...four...ready...goooooooo" And things like "Are you okay?" "Comehereokay?" as well as proudly exclaiming, "Make a poop!"

I have seen a few greys say very long sentences. For your story it would not be in unreasonable for him to give clues. My Grey is very intuitive and often tells us things before it happens.

The other day I was just about to get up to go to the store and he said, get me a goodie!

Never heard that before.

Longest phrase from my TAG "ET" is "Good night, ET."

Not very long, but always appropriately delivered, either when the sun goes down, or more accurately when the shades in his room are drawn.

You talk about how intuitive they are and how they apply Grey-logic to things, well, my son came in the other day (adult that doesn't live with me any longer) and said, "Mom, I'm going back to the police force." (He, thankfully, left that job about a year ago and I've slept so much better since!) And I replied, "Oh, no!" My Grey immediately said, "Red Alert! Red Alert!" We all just cracked up laughing! He'd never said that before, ever. We were stumped about where he'd come up with that, but then it hit me. . . we've been watching some old "Star Trek Voyager" episodes on Netflix (guess I gave myself away as a sci-fi nerd LOL) and he has heard a female captain give that command in the "heat of battle" soooo in his little Grey brain, that was appropriate in this "high drama" scenario. Certainly defused the situation. Greys are a daily delight. All birds are, of course, but Greys do stuff like THAT that leave you stunned at their level of comprehension and empathy with their flock mates. . . us.

Smokey would carry on a phone conversation in my moms voice..she'd begin with making the phone ring..then say " hello? uh huh..hahahaha..ya,thats right,ok,talk to you later,BYE" she did this I think just to freak mom out lol.. RIP MOM AND SMOKEY :)

We have been writing down everything that Leroy says since he came to live with us tw weeks ago (My BIL passed away and this was his buddy) So far, the longest thing besides a phone conversation that Leroy says is "What are you doing in there....are you being a good boy?" He has picked up at least three or four things that my husband and I say too - of course it's not anything we're trying to teach him - he actually makes the "pew, pew, pew" sound I made at him the other day when he was going through his Laser beam sounds. He's a riot!

Love your examples. My Isaac has some phone conversation and yells at the dogs in complete sentences. It seems like he never learns what I want him to!:D

We've only had Pip for about a week, and I haven't heard anything terribly long, just "come here, you gimme kiss"

But their logic is spot on. Less than 24 hours in the new house and she figured out where the coats were hung, and every time someone puts a hand on that door, she makes a zipper sound (like a coat zipper) and says "buh-bye!"

My Leo only says a few words but keeps repeating them over and over. His favorite one being "peek-a-boo" and calls out "Ridoo" my youngest daughter's name. Quite often he would go.."peeka, peeka, peeka, peekaboo ridoo." Followed by a laugh.

They study things, and then it's like clockwork.Certain things happen the same way every day, they pick up words and phrases in context, and then use them in that context. They anticipate what is going to happen next. They take their clues from watching everything we do. Sometimes they know what we will do before we do it...

The phone or doorbell rings, Tusk is always the first one to say "Hello." (Because that's what happens every time he hears that. Someone says hello... ) Sometimes he'll say "Sarah, get the door", and then say "Hello."

Sometimes he'll imitate the doorbell, and yell Sarah get the door - and then laugh at her for answering it - there's no one there!

My gray has been telling me "it's time for bed" five minutes before his actual bedtime, for ten years...

He tells me when it's "time to go to work. I gotta go. You be a good boy." As I'm packing up to leave.

We taught him the "Food, wonderful food, we're anxious to try it..." song the vultures were singing in the original Ice Age movie... And every day since then, for many years: "Time for breakfast! Food, wonderful food, we're anxious to try it!"

Teach them things in context, they pick it up in context. Much more readily than many of the other species.
