I'm trying to narrow down what conure type i'd like, and have done a bit of research but would like to hear from actual experienced owners at this point :)

Currently I only have experience in real life with green cheeks (who I love and adore now) but my 4 top species at the moment are: 1. Maroon bellied conure (although I am guessing these are rare since I can't find anyone local to me), 2. Peach Fronted, 3. Dusky Headed, and Red Masked.

I personally think green cheeks are quiet, so looking for something around that noise level if possible (but less inclined to be nippy) and more prone to snuggle and be friendly. Definitely trying to avoid species that make the neighbors think you're murdering somebody in your house lol

While Jendays and suns aren't on my list I'd love to hear from any of those owners as well, you may change my mind :D They sure are gorgeous...

I'd love to see pics too, so please feel free to show off your babies!

Sun conure. Why? Because she is amazing everyday in every way. She is kind, loving, beautiful, smart, silly, not too loud and I'm lucky to have her!

I, myself, can't pick a favorite conure As any conure can steal my heart [emoji6] I am owned by a green cheeked conure (Sammi) as well as a moustached parakeet (Kazi)

That picture of Molly on her back is sooooooo cute!!! :D

I personally owned a Jenday and he was great, but if I were to get another I'd get a sun conure. I love their striking tropical colors, and they are very similar to Jendays as far as looks and size. They are super affectionate, loving, can learn lots of tricks and are good all around birds.

Thank you! She is the cutest!

I love everything about my sun conure. He's like a bird and a clown mixed into one. Super super smart and wants nothing but to be with you. That's his mission in life. Everything Sunnyclover said applies to Moonie except one thing...I can't say he's not too loud. He is quiet as a mouse as long as you are in the same room with him, but will call for you if you leave him alone and his call is LOUD! Wouldn't trade my little brat for anything!

Welcome! My dusky is the most outspoken in the house! Has many different whistles we do and will say pretty bird. If I am around the corner or leave the room he calls out for me LOUDLY ha. But overall he is a great bird. Only gets nippy when he doesn't want to do something. My hands are not allowed to get him out of his cage he comes out on his own but is always my shoulder Velcro sweet bird after. He doesn't like to stay still for pictures at all but I'll post a few. Good luck on your search!

I want a Dusky conure. They are the perfect size with such pretty eyes. I love green cheeks I have a black capped conure. He is Crazy very nippy and never chills for long. Always on the go. he is young under a year.

I love sun conures they are awesome! with a great personality. That scream is why I don't have one. Oh but I have falling in love with just about everyone I have met.......

Conures are Goofy, hyper, stubborn, needy, clown like, nippy, feisty, loving, FUN, and loud. My black capped is not that loud but he can be when he wants to.

Molly calls for me when I leave too..Like one or two good squawks but then chills while I'm gone. She also greets me with some squawks but these things do not bother me! It's nice.

My favorite conure is the Patagonian.

The Rickeybird made me say that.

When asked what is my favorite, can I say "All of them!"?

Actually, I do have a fondness for my two Blue Crowns. I don't have any first hand experience of being owned by any other species other than budgies and Senegals.

Blue Crowns are fun but in my experience they are not hyper birds. Both of mine are more sedate though Rosco will get his spells where he wants to fly back and forth from cage to play stand occasionally. Mostly it seems to be a need to burn off some energy.

They can get loud. Mostly evenings for my pair. Tootsie is a very vocal bird. Probably very abnormal for the species from what I can tell. Sometimes her continuing noise can be a bit exasperating. But when she is quiet and loving, she is fantastic. Rosco is not as friendly though he is a rescue who had a big fear of hands when I adopted him. But he has come along quite nicely.

Both birds are inquisitive though Rosco takes it to a new level. He is always watching and aware of what is going on. Many a time he has alerted me that my Senegal was getting into something he should not. He will fly down to near Sidney and start sounding off calling for me to come and see. It is funny. Especially when he seems so pleased when I come. Yeah, he trained me well. ;)

Blue Crowns are a bit larger than most of the more popular conures. But for me, their size is ideal. Personality of a larger macaw but a perfect size to plant one in the middle of the chest while you kick back and enjoy some cuddle time.

I may be biased, but i would suggest considering a Blue Crown along with others. But regardless of species, take the bird's wishes into account. Often times, it is the bird that chooses you. And it may not be a species that you were even considering.

The big macaws scare the pants off me but size isn't really a qualification other than tied to loudness ;)

I definitely hope to have a bird "choose me" as these guys are so smart, is petco/smart a valid place to get a bird as a rescue may not take my 6 months of caring and training my friends bird as personal ownership to rescue (or it isn't long enough)

The great thing about conures and it seems to be universal as far as the type- is that you get ALL the benefits and pluses you'd get with a larger bird, without having to have a larger bird.

In my experience, that's the only real difference between conures and the larger birds- the size and things relative to it.

I've only ever owned one conure, my Skittles so I am partial to suns but even if I had other types, I think sunnies would still be my favorite. I do love their colors, and the only thing more colorful than their feathers is their personalities.

Before I got Skittles in 2010, I had only had budgeis and cockatiels for the most part. I did have a ringneck dove at one point as well as a lovebird- but I rehomed both. The dove cause it was causing too much of a sleep disturbance issue and the lovebird cause a friend of mine's mother had a pair of lovebirds and one of them died, so I gave him my lovebird to give to his mom so neither of them would be alone. I hated doing it, but it was best for both birds.

I have had strong bonds with budgies before and they ARE great companions as are cockatiels- but they are also a LOT less maintenance than a conure. I like the maintenance. It's good for my mental health. I LOVED my tiel Peaches with all my heart, I had her for almost 20 years, but she was a goody-two-shoes. A PERFECT angel. Never misbehaved and was always a gentle little angel. So much so, it would get on my nerves. lol. In fact, the only real issue I ever had with her in all those years was chronic egg laying. She was NEVER a behavioral issue bird. She behaved perfectly. Skittles on the other hand is a little devil! But he can also be an angel too. So its a nice blend with him.

I would like to own a pineapple green cheek at one point. But its not in the cards right now.

I've seen many different types of conures that are owned by people on this site and I have to say I love them all. Just don't tell my Skitty!

I got my Sprinkles from PetCo....... I did not want to he was over priced and I did not want to support this store selling these birds. Sprinkles picked us. I visited him 3 days and the store is 30 min away. The 3rd day I got him. He pulled out all the trick and I could not say no to him. I KNEW the first day I met him he was going to be a nipper. He had a BAD rep with the employees for biting hard. Well yes he nips me but it is all in fun he has gotten softer with his bites. Thats all I ask is for him to not bite me hard. He is doing great. I just know if he was at the store to long and at such a high price NO one would get him and he would be Damaged. Making it harder for him to find a good home. So I feel like I saved him. I love this little bird so much.

Try not to buy from big box stores... If the bird is right do it. Just know you are getting ripped off at these stores.

Thank you snowflake, that is exactly what i needed to know. How does one find a breeder or who else should i be looking for to get a bird from? Still trying to look into the rescues around here but just in case...

I got my Molly at Petco and she was over priced but was amazing! I was lucky. All the employees were so nice and were sad to see her leave, so much so that a couple of days ago I made a visit to the store for them to see she is doing well. Everyone was happy to see her!

Last question for now (you all are rock stars!)...the only other bird I've been considering are budgies as i had them briefly as a kid but am not sure they'd be as bonded and friendly as the conures? I have read they can talk which is cool but not one of my bird requirements;)

Budgies are great! My sister in law has one and he's a sweet pea. He's even learning to say words!
As far as type all conures are great IMO. I have a Green Cheek and a Jenday Conure and they are too cute. My CCC is far more affectionate than my Jenday although I don't know if that is typical.
My suggestion, and this is what I did, is to go on Craigslist and see what you can find. 9 times out of 10 you will be rescuing them out of a bad situation and you won't have to worry about breeders and hand raising.
If that's what you want then disregard, but that is what I did and I feel it was the best thing I could do. Birds have such long life spans that you really won't be missing out on too much time and you can even find baby conures sometimes that people have lost interest in (thats my little Leo)
Both of my Birdies are re-homes and I love them to pieces.
Oh and btw it's also a lot cheaper to adopt 😉
