What is Safe to Chew

Fred loves to chew. He has some plastic maracas, which he will soon have destroyed. I've just bought him a Tambourine, which I'm sure he's going to love. He loves Turkey leg bones. I've been giving him all these things, assuming that he won't eat the palstic or bone shards. Am I being a complete dummy for assuming that he won't swallow plastic or bone shards?

I think this is set of one of those "know youur bird" questions. I have watched Ms. Prissy Beak very carefuly and com to the conclusion that there is almost zero chance she will swallow something that isn't "tasty". She destroys wood and plastic items with aplomb, but always drops the pieces... She especially enjoys dissasembling cat toys and I can always pretty much reconstuct the whole from the mangled bits left under her perch. Though I'm not sure I woulld trust her with a bone as it has some food-taste to it.

My girllfriend's Amazon Cody, on the other hand has had to have buttons and other small items he shouldn't be swallowing forcibly removed from his greedy little beak. And he needs to be given only toys he can't break into small pieces, or things like wood, where if he eats a little bit it's probably not going to do any damage.

Thanks! I really don't know if he swallows any small pieces, but he leaves a lot of litter when chewing such things. I've read that both plastic and bones are safe, and I've read that both are unsafe...:confused:I think I'll have to reassess what toys he gets.

Unless it's almost gaurenteed as safe I would recomend airing caution and giving it during a supervised play time

Sterretjie has got a habit of swallowing everything except cardboard. I took all the breakable toys away for this reason. She plays a full day long with a box - she destroys it completely until nothing is left!:D

Yes know the bird is really important. Linky it is so great that the boxes work. Rosie loves the kleenex boxes and the kleenex which I try to get ahold of less I have bits of tissue all over the place.
