what do you think about happy huts?

im confused. should i get a happy hut?? i wont get it, i mean.... i'll make one.

but some people say male budgies dont use it, and my bamboo is a male.
i have also heard that they are really dangerous and stuff/ i dont get how it can be dangerous though. so you all must be pretty experienced wid all this, so tell me what you think...

I think they can be dangerous.
One of mine gcc got stuck in something like that and there was blood allover.
It looked like a bloodbad.
Thankfully it turned out to be a little scrape on her toe.
Her partner tried freeing her and accidentally cut her,while she was moving around.
I will never use any kind of fabric again in their cages.

I can't speak from personal experience because my Jackie-boy is so skittish, he will surely have a stroke and die if I had to put something that big into his cage! BUT, I have read enough negative comments about happy huts to give me pause. I know many birdies love them but the number of warnings I've seen on different forums, worries me.

I have happy huts for some of my birds....and inspect them constantly. If I feel they are becoming a danger they are removed.

One thing people forget are the elasticized fabric that is used to hang them.... I've never seen this happening but I'm sure it can very easily.....the bird can crawl through in between the fabric and become entangled in it. they are typically over an inch long, which is plenty of space for a bird to get thru, twist around while playing and become caught.

I've shortened mine up considerably(1/2") so they cannot crawl thru.

Budgies generally don't like enclosed spaces unless they're breeding. He probably wouldn't go near the thing. It looks cute, but as everyone stated they can be more hazardous than beneficial. Birds are meant to sleep perched. Plus you don't want him to swallow the fabric in those things.

This is the type of hutt we use. there isn't a large hanging rope for the kids to get caught in and so far they have not tried to shred them. I used bamboo as a perch/hanging position. Mango likes them because they are very fun to run through during the day.

It's bottomless with a keyhole opening at the back so you can mount it over a perch. That way the bird has an area of privacy, but can still perch naturally, and the likelihood of getting tangled up in it is reduced. You still have to observe it for hazardous wear and tear from chewing or climbing, of course.

Before I got this, Leonard had a "room" made up of some polar fleece I cut into long strips and hung so that he would be hidden on three sides, but could still peer out regardless what position he was in. If boy keets don't normally dig those houses, this might be an option for you.

Several parronts have excitedly added the happy but for their parrots, then awoke to a strangled bird. It's terrible! A few members here have also had bad experiences, not sure if anyone had a fatal one yet on the forum.

The happy hut is one of the most dangerous bird cage accessories. Several members can suggest safer alternatives.

The breeder I got Tallulah from says with female birds it can increase the chances of egg laying. I don't want my bird to lay eggs, and that can become a health problem, so I don't use one. I would consider it with a male but I would be very choosey of the kind I got. ErichT, I like the looks of yours.

We only use one with my parrotlets, and check it every day for loose threads, etc. Luckily neither one has chewed on it yet, but I keep a very close eye on it.
My male budgie Russell has a play tent that has a perch inside and he sleeps in it. He also hasn't chewed it, but I keep a really close eye on him as well.

I use a tent like happy hut for my linnies. Linnies like to sleep on their keel bone. They don't tear stuff up, but I check it out daily.

I wouldn't use one for my sennie who I know chews like a little demon.

I have that same hut for months and it looks new. My Queen of Bavaria got her nail caught on the inside of the hut!!!! Makes no since. She was in a panic and thank God I was watching her when it happened. I look at it and still can't figure out how he wrapped his nail around the short nap. I had to put my hand around his neck and with the other hand unscrew both hooks while he was going crazy!!! I didn't get hurt but it was a job doing it by myself. Bailey really misses his hut but I am afraid to put it back. Its not even looped nap just short fabric. Amazing! Funny I have a new one never used as a backup for cleaning the used one and now just to afraid to use it. If I hadn't been here I hate to think of what might have happened.

My Green Cheek and Sun Conure has been sleeping in one for almost 2 years and it still looks new. I think if you have a chewer then it may not be a good idea. Nether one of mine chew on there Happy Hut. They love it.

We have used them frequently, and have had no problems yet. The brand we use is the Scooter Z's 'Snugglie' hut, which does not fray or leave loose threads, as it is made of fleece. They are attached with quick links rather than material or elastic. I feel that the huts that tend to cause problems are those that are made of faux fur material, which breaks down into threads.

My male Quaker has a bare ring of scar tissue and scar on his leg from being tangled in a happy hut before we adopted him. We were told he almost died. A lot of my friends have used them for years but none of my birds have them.
