Lilo - Female Green Cheek Conure ~ Pal - male cockatiel ~ Pheobe - female cockatiel
So my bird room aka my room smells bad when I leave the door shut for a long period of time. My room has been through 2 lizards, 1 snake, 2 Girbles, 1 rat, 1 bunny, two batches of newly hatched chickens, 3 birds, and finally fish. They were all in there temporally then moved but it smells like a pet shop in there. :( how do I cover the smell. I know I cant spray any air fresheners because of Lilo so what shall I do. I clean her cage out either once a day or every other day so it's not her cage. Is there fruit I can put in there? Thanks for any answers! :)

Ugh yes we are pulling it up soon and outing down hard wood. That will probably help.

Yes ridding the carpet will definitely help with the smell!!!! You'd be amazed how bad it smells when you start yanking it up.....I only have one room left with carpet and I used a carpet cleaner but that didn't last long. It stinks over time....I can't wait to refinish it...But we only have certain amount of budget each year to do certain project and that won't be done until next fall...ugh....

In the meantime you could try baking soda all over the whole carpet (or the smelly areas) let it sit then vacuum it up, it will absorb some of that odor.

You could go on an all refried beans diet and then the carpet would smell like roses in comparison.

my bird room smells(ed) as well. In the summer it smells great, I leave the window open.
when the weather turns cooler(colder) I leave it open a crack, but have a heater in there.

I removed the carpeting and put down laminate flooring, and it made a huge difference with the smell, and much much better for my asthma.

Thanks guys! :)

Kalidasa: Thank you, I will defenitly try that! Thanks! :)

Goalerjones: haha ya I bet that will help lots! :D

finally a question on here that a newbie like me can answer........

Vinegar !!!!

clean the carpet with vinegar in your steam cleaner..... or you can mist spray it over the floor without using the steam cleaner/shampooer

use it in the washing machine as well when you clean the curtains, which you should do at the same time, they hold odors too.

You can get the bottles at Dollar General cheap too. use the white distilled. I use it all the time. Vinegar is a natural odor killer. now, it will smell for a bit. but as it drys all scents are gone. vinegar and the the bad scent u trying to get rid of. move ya bird out of the room for awhile. just til the odor of vinegar is gone.

hope this helps ya!

tip: if ya got any toys for them in there , mostly cloth stuff since it holds odor, put it in a plastic bag and throw em in the freezer over night. odor gone!

I have carpet in my bird rooms and use an air purifier in each room. I definitely could tell a difference in the smell and air quality after I started running them.
