Mango and Munchlax (Peach Faced Lovebirds)
so my husband and i went out of town on vacation for a few days and my in-laws fid-sat for us. each day we got updates, everything was pretty good at home.

monday we came home. we walk in, our cockatiels sounding off, so happy to see us home. but it was quiet in the lovebirds' room. we walk in, mango was there feeding his ball, he was just fine.

but, munch was nowhere to be seen. her cage was quiet, no noise, no movement...

i look at my husband and ask where munch is. we both look in her cage.

we had recently changed her cage back to the single cage and created a grate out of thick plastic hardware cloth.

and where was munch?

she flipped over her foraging drawer, took it apart, and chewed a hole through the grate and was hiding under the grate shredding her cage papers! you can bet she made a nest out of it...

called our in-laws, when they left an hour before we got home, munch was playing with the foraging drawer, cage grate fully intact!

leave it to munch to dig to China through her cage grate and give us a heart attack. luckily, she wasnt under the grate for too long, because she couldnt get back out. we had to take the cage apart to get her! she chewed a 1" wide hole and squeezed herself in.

what a funny and smart little bugger! her determination astounds me!

i wish i could post photos, but our laptop broke while on vacation, so i am on my 3DS WIFI. unable to post photos on anything but facebook

Yikes, good thing she wasn't there for too long. What a determined little birdie.

You realize that now that that is a newly learned egress avenue, you'll have to remove all of that plastic HW cloth because she'll teach all how to get out.....

yeah we removed it, we had to take apart the window ledge to give her a grate :( they loved that ledge :/ but it was a cage grate before, made for a cage lol

i am impressed and astounded that she pulled this stunt! she sure keeps us on our toes lol gotta love miss munch! her antics sure are amusing!

You do realize in a contest Munch is way ahead of you guys and you are loosing badly.:D

haha she outsmarts us all the time, she is such a hoot!

at least she is keeping our minds active as we try to outsmart her lol we fail 60% of the time lol

i totally see why people refer to lovebirds as big birds in little bodies lol

I do have to say, I am quite impressed with the neatness around the edges of that perfectly rectangular hole! She absolutely knew what she wanted to accomplish!

I'm glad she's safe.

munch is like a pair of pliers, and a shredder...maybe you should try stainless steel...oh wait, or is she wire cutters too?? :)...sorry I just couldn't resist.
you have quite the little monkey there, I'm not sure what I would do.
glad she is ok and you came home when you did!

She is VERY lucky to have you as her human mama...because you still love her and take good care of her even though she is so challenging.

well, my dream birds are amazons. if i cant love munch's shananigans, then i wont be able to ever deal with a moody zon lol

besides, she would not be munch if she didnt pull these stunts. at least if no one got hurt, we can get a good laugh over it. just goes to show what she can get away with when we aren't looking lol

she is a whole 65 grams of trouble :p

as for stainless, would be an awesome option if we could afford it, and if we could get it!

we spent $20 on a huge roll of the heavy duty plastic mesh. that was hard plastic. i had a bit of trouble cutting it with wire cutters. so we only had needed 19"x19" of this massive 15'x3' roll! in the end, it was totally wasted.

oh well, live and learn. $20 for a good laugh! at least we will find use for that mesh. i already made a window screen for our bathroom window out of it. now i can leave the bathroom window open for a nice breeze without a worry of escape :D munch doesnt have unsupervised access to that room, none of the birds do. so its great at least.

Munch certainly lived up to her name, though, munching through some heavy duty mesh.

She's as lucky to have you looking out for her as you are to have her challenging your creativity and problem solving, though!
