Well, this started out as being about conures...

I swear, conures are just big macs in teensy little bodies! If people treated them the same way, they'd be known as great pets and one of the best parrot types in the pet trade.
But instead, most people treat them like budgies or tiels, put them in small cages with minimal attention and do nothing but carry them around on a shoulder when they are out. Just because they're so small!
I can tell by the way that writers talk about them in books and such that they barely see them as worth spending time with. 'Fun little birds, good size for apartments or children'. Sorry for the rant but it had to be said.
Conures are amazing birds when you give them regular interaction. Good talkers when you talk to them enough. Sweet and playful when you play with them enough. Silly and fun when you're silly with them.
This goes for any parrot. I'm just so tired of people not spending any time with their bird then claiming that the species is 'boring and not attention-oriented'.
Go hug your birds, everybody. Especially the small ones. They deserve it.

I've never had a conure, but have both interacted with them and heard about them for enough years to know that they ARE just like little Macaws! They are definitely social, and NOT one of the more independent species. Just because they're small, they aren't for everyone. Although "everyone" is getting one due to their popularity! :(

I should NOT have gone on craigslist this morning!

Someone is re-homing a turquoise 1 year old male and they only live a couple miles from me!!!

Waiting to see what his re-homing fee is...

What about Bean? Did I miss anything about that?

You didn't miss anything (apparently I have a really bad case of MBS) Bean is still waiting to come home!

I'm hoping the Turquoise would eventually be for my Brother, sorry I forgot to say that in the beginning! Or I could just have lots of birds!!!

I love my gcc Parry so much - he has a huge personality in a small body! He is like a little human in many ways. :)

I've been saying that for years. Conures are just shrunken macaws.

They are very closely related.

Does it mean that if you have experience with conures you should sort of know hoW to handle macaws? :)

I happen to think the answer to this question is in large part YES.

With the proviso that some folks immediately telegraph their "large bird" fear to a macaw, and a macaw will pick up on the visual clues and manipulate that one to his advantage just as quickly....

Don't know, they haven't answered me back yet. If he is still there I'm sure I will. I have met me once or twice! LOL

Here is a link to a pic of him... http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/pet/4832258998.html

I'm new to the whole parrot scene but pazu, our GCC, seems to want to but on our shoulders most the time. We play with him, but he seems like he'd be on out shoulders or head for all of time if he had a choice. We try not to let him run the show too much, so we practice his only trick of picking him up and holding him upside down on our hands. Great for getting him used to being held, hoping I never have to towl him this way.

Gccs are awesome. I have enjoyed learning about having them in the past 8 months we've had our Peep. Someday, if the opportunity ever presented itself, I would easily take a macaw. If they are anything like Peep, it would be great.

I got a Pineapple Green Cheek a little over a week ago... how do I spend quality time with her? She sits on my shoulder, crawls around my neck/chest, but not much else. How do I make our time together more worthwhile?

- Looks like Kiwiberry agrees too! She's trying to take the keys off the keyboard.

It's so annoying when people say that small parrots aren't parrots, or 'real' parrots. With that logic, a small dog wouldn't be a real dog either, but say that to a dog-person and they'd flip.

When I play with Kiwiberry we usually finger wrestle, play tug-of-war or cuddle.
Sometimes she likes to be a little meanie when she's on my shoulder and try to lick me inside the nostril or get at my eye, usually when I'm busy or eating.

I am often asked what kinds of parrots I have, when I gush about my conures people get a diss appointed look on thier face and say "oh, so you don't have any, like, big parrots?" I have not handled macaws in more than passing, but I don't feel the need to ever "outgrow" "upgrade" or "move on" to larger birds.

I've never had a conure, but have always thought they were cute little guys.

I did have a budgie years ago and I always got the same reaction to him. He might have been little, but he never knew he was little! He was the "biggest baddest" birdie he could be! He was uber bonded to me and went almost everywhere I did. People always told me he wasn't a "real" parrot!
