Parrots
i am the mom of three parrots:
Dorothy- African grey (cag)
Bowie- blue and gold macaw
Nellie- hyacinth macaw
Reggie- hyacinth macaw
Marnie- white bellied caique
So tonight I am feeding Kiwi some of her beloved seed out of a bowl. I was holding the bowl and she finally stepped on it. After patiently holding the bowl (did I mention, she is a chubby lca!) I slowly moved it out of the cage, no problem. I put her on the playtop on the top of her cage, thought she might like to take a look at the outside of her cage. Well I gave her a few treats up there and then thought I would try and put her back in (make this first trip short) no way, she is having no part of me getting her to step up. She will step up beautifully once she is away from the cage however not when in or apparently on her cage. I am sitting here wondering how the heck I'm going to get her back in. I tried holding the bowl in front of her thinking maybe she would step on it. nope! Help! I haven't been able to get her out for a week and a half now I can't get her in! Wow, trying to "out wit" a parrot is exhausting! Lol I have never researched, thought about, obsessed more about anything than trying to make this little girl happy and healthy!

Ok, she's in! I kept holding the bowl in front of her and she finally figured out that I was going to annoy the heck out of her with that bowl until she stepped on it. I slowly had her step up onto my hand from the bowl and put her in the cage, fed her some popcorn (her fav) Now if I could only figure out why she will not step up onto my hand from inside or on top of her cage. Why do you think that is??

Next time if she gives you trouble going back in the cage you could let her see you put a favorite treat in the cage (like the popcorn) and she may go in after it. :)

she might not have been ready for in lol

but nuts not a fan of being put in her cage i generally put some of her fav food into her cage to tempt her, but i need to move away as well, then she'll climb in

my man kinda picks her up and she has this *awww sulky look on her face, when he does

an lol @ out witting a parrot

last night nut flew at me, so i told her sternly *NO BITE! so she landed on my shoulder, leaning away from my face at a 90 degree angle?? looking at me all innocent! any1 looking in would have thought i badly stuck a parrot on my shoulder for fancy dress!!! she's funny like that, she won't step up, sometimes, but will fly for a lift, but she sometimes adds a nip in after she's landed

suebee - LOL!! Puck will stand at a 45 degree angle when he's leery of something. It's SOOO CUTE.

brianlinkles - congratulations on getting her out of her cage!

I used the bowl trick when Merlin was 1st home. He wouldn't step up on my hand, but would for the food bowl. Whatever works. Now she knows nothing bad will happen to her if she gets out of the cage. Hope it continues to go well.

I think behaviors are different in and around the cage, if it's perceived as a safe place. I'd continue working with her using the food bowl. She may loosen up over time, although I've heard some birds always have territorial issues around their cage. It's one of the reasons I've opted not to get a cage with playtop. I'll set up a separate play area. Some believe this will reduce aggression around the cage, though there are no doubt differing opinions on that :) This is one of the issues I'll be paying attention to when I attend a 2-day bird seminar in September.
