Weird feather?

I noticed this morning that Mango has an odd feather on her back. It looks like a normal yellow feather but the shaft of it is black. Is this a problem? I heard something about feathers turning black with malnutrition...should I be worried? She has been molting now for forever if that makes a difference.

Note: to get this photo, I had to have her perch on my finger and have my husband tempt her to lean forward by putting a teeny dab of butter on his finger. [emoji23]

On a completely separate note, mango keeps picking at the frostbite blisters on my cheeks. Sigh. Some things will never change.

meh, normal, it probably still has some blood in it from being a pin feather. It's nothing to be concerned about.

Yeah, what Clark said...Whenever a feather-shaft is black in color, that means that it either is currently a blood-feather (and you don't want to ever cut them, just an FYI), or there is residual blood in them that is dried. Either way, it's normal...

***As far as what you heard about a dark/black feather-shaft being an indication of malnutrition, that's totally untrue...There are changes in the color of their actual feathers, as well as the integrity/strength of their feathers that can be an indication of different health issues, including nutritional issues, but a dark-colored feather-shaft is not one of them.
