Weaning Maalik

I recently read a great article on abundance vs deficit feeding of baby CAGS as it relates to their behavioral development. The author strongly advised abundance feeding them, as it helps them to grow up to be less anxious birds.

I knew when I picked up Maalik that he was still on one formula feeding a day. However, I offered it this morning, and he readily took it. So now I'm beginning to think I should be offering it twice daily for now.

Your thoughts???

Yes, you can offer it twice, NOTHING wrong with that.

I NEVER followed a set schedule with my Amazons and Eclectus when I was weaning them. There were days they would take 2-3 feedings readily, and other days only one. If they refused, I didn't push the issue. If they begged, I had no problem making up some formula.

I am a FIRM believer in abundance weaning. It makes for happy and confident parrots, especially if they are socialized properly as well.

There's nothing wrong with that at all. It would make you have a healthy happy baby!

In fact, study after study says it's beneficial...

Sit him down on your lap and feed him with a spoon. Make sure the formula doesn't have any hot spots. We don't want to burn his crop!!!

The breeder gave me a syringe to feed him with. Problem is that I'm not very good at it, and end up shooting about half of it all over him. Perhaps I should switch over to using a spoon.

please do use a spoon!

If you are not experienced you could overfill his crop, or accidentally asphyxiate him by syringe feeding!!!
