RIP Ivy 3/23/12-4/12/13,

New congo grey baby comes home sometime in May!
I meant to post this last week, but I was so busy with our new addition that I didn't think of it. Rio the catalina macaw came home with us last Tuesday :D He's a LOVEBUG and a huge cuddler! It's too funny though - I've wanted a macaw my entire life. My husband's always wanted a grey, but I won that battle because greys are notorious for bonding with only one person, and macaws aren't AS likely to do that. I wanted a bird that could love both of us. Well...Rio has 100% completely fallen in love with my husband  LOL. Whenever Eric (hubby) comes into the room, that bird is off my chest and flying to him within 10 seconds. If Eric goes to bed and Rio is on top of his cage, Rio flies to our bed and tries pulling the covers down to cuddle up with Eric and nibbles his ear until he pays attention to him :D...too funny! Now I'm not saying the bird hates me by any means - this morning I woke up to him laying on his back next to my head and he was chirping (yes, chirping!) in my ear (I like to think they were sweet nothings :p). So I think he may be warming up to me. But he reaaaaaaaally loves my husband, and poor Eric is a little tired of getting ALL the love. He has to hide from Rio when passing the living room like he's in special ops or something, because if that bird so much as catches a glimpse of him, he swoops off his perch with a quickness to join him on his shoulder/back/head/arm/whatever he can land on haha. However, when Eric is at work I'm the target of affection, so I can't complain - he gives me love too ;)

I think he's enjoying being fully winged and out of the cage during the day VERY much. So much, in fact, that he never wants to go into his cage to sleep or hang out in at night, either. His big ass 36x46x78 cage is in our bedroom but he prefers to sleep ON it rather than IN it :20:. He fights us every step of the way when we try to put him in it, and the only time he really gets worked up and screams is when he's in the cage. After a while he will settle down, but we reserve the cage only for when we aren't home (a rarity) because he really seems to dislike being cooped up. He will play with his toys in it and climb all around once he's settled, but the first 15 minutes in it and he's a squawking flapping mess! During his day he hangs on top of his cage, on top of our bedroom door, and downstairs either on his java tree or our TV stand. Of course, he prefers our shoulder or chest over anything, which is fine by me.

He likes everyone in the house except for the huge energetic dog and the fast moving, inquisitive toddler, which is to be expected lol. He's actually taken a huge interest in the cats, but they don't seem to share the love, and are happy to watch him from a distance. As far as talking, he's very funny with it. He will ONLY talk when he thinks no one is listening - I have heard him three times now in the middle of the night quietly (and by quietly I mean he was purposely whispering, like he didn't want anyone to hear because he hasn't perfected it yet) practicing "hello", "good bird", step up", "pretty bird", and "Rio". I think he also made sneeze sounds and kiss sounds, both of which I've been doing in front of him on purpose. He has said hello about four times during the day, but he saves everything else for when we're "asleep".

He's definitely all baby still - he's a bit unsure of himself and is cautious around new things. He prefers to stay close to me and Eric, even if it means leaving where he's perched to fly into the other room where we are. He's a bit clumsy with his landings, but I'm sure he'll get better now that he's got full range of the house to fly in and explore all day, instead of being kept in a cage 24/7. He's had two sessions in the shower which he really seemed to enjoy, though it seems he'd rather have ME preen him afterward by gently fluffing his feathers than to do it himself. I REALLY need to build a shower perch - he's been using my arm as a perch, which leaves me VERY wet when it's all said and done, either with scratches all over my bare arm or a VERY soaked long sleeve shirt :09:.

He loves grapes and peanuts and will go to great lengths to dig through his food for them. I also think he poops on Eric on purpose - and I find it hysterical. Every time he's on him, he poops, and it's only with him. We can't figure it out. He feels the most relaxed with him, maybe? Who knows. Better him than me :09: Anyway, he's an absolute joy to have and I'm so glad we decided to get him. He's a character and we love him so much already! I have about a thousand pics of him on my phone, which is dead right now. I will be uploading lots of pix in the am. Thanks for reading, and I'll keep you all updated on him! :rainbow1::rainbow1:

That's awesome to hear!!!! Just watch out though, I wouldn't leave him unattended, he'll chew through your door, your furniture, etc. Anything he can get his beak on when you allow him to roam freely like that!

Thanks! The only room he's ever unsupervised in is the living room, which we made sure to bird proof before setting up his play stand in there. He hangs on his java tree most of the time, or on top of the TV stand, or the cat tower (which the cats never use, go figure!). If we go to another room, he's usually with us, not because we make him, but because he flies to our shoulder if we try to leave him by himself ;P Our bedroom (where his cage is) is pretty bare - I like simplicity so that worked to our advantage in this situation. There's nothing on our dressers and only a lamp and alarm clock on each of the night stands. So far he hasn't tried to knock them off (fingers crossed). We made sure to buy a LOT of different style bird toys for him to choose from, so he's been busy playing/chewing/biting the RIGHT stuff so far :D

Willie our macaw is actually a pretty good macaw. Even when I forgot to padlock his cage, if he gets out, he stays on his cage or in his cage with the door wide open. He never stroll around and destroy anything in the house ever. Now the Cockatoos are a different story, I can not take my eyes off them at all what so ever, they will have something chewed up. I had to remove my hanging plant that was placed about a foot and a half away from Java's cage, somehow he got ahold of it while he was in his cage, we have absolutely no idea how he managed that....IF they were given to opportunity to roam, they'll have my house ate up....lol....I have not allowed Willie to meet with Java yet, I think they would fight big time....Everyone in my household is terrified of Willie, he's the king parrot of the house, no dogs, cats nor birds mess with him. Plus all visitors are terrified of him cause he tries to attack them. And he is my bird only, plus I share him with one of the dogs whom he loves dearly....lol....

your bird sounds fab! welcome, pics an funny stories please lol
although your bird hates his cage, might be a good idea to get him use to it now while his a baby, as i'd imagine when his all grown up, he'll have other ways of avoiding that cage lol

Ooooooo, you lucky person. Catalina Macaws are my favorite. I would be very careful though. I see on Craigslist and in the papers in my area all the time where a bird be it African Grey, Macaws, or other species fly away. I lost two out of open doors myself. So both my birds are clipped.

Congrats ...wish you so much happiness with Catalina
She sounds awesome.
If I had a bigger place, I would get a Macaw, my dream bird

Thanks everyone! We are SUPER careful when opening doors and always check to see where he is beforehand. I too have seen lost birds on craigslist, and we are 110% vigilant when it comes to keeping him from flying out. And I completely agree about getting him used to the cage now. My husband and I were having that exact same conversation two days ago. Not only because it will be harder once he's older, but also because his food and water are in there, not on top, so he needs to learn that he has to go inside if he wants to eat/drink. I don't want a dehydrated bird! (He has food & water downstairs on his java tree so during the day he's fine, I'm talking about at night here). MikeyTN, I think Rio is going to be the same way as your Willie. He's a REALLY good macaw, I mean super laid back and QUIET. Not exactly the adjectives I thought I'd ever use for any macaw :p, but he really is! He makes less noise than our sun conure did, and he's perfectly happy to sit with us all day and just hang. He doesn't really try to get into too much trouble (at least yet) and likes his tree and perches that we have set up for him, so we're lucky so far! Phone is charged, so I'm going to be posting pics within the next half hour.

I would probably make him spend more time in his cage just because at some point he will probably have to. You may want to go on vacation someday, or one of you could be in the hospital and the other will want to be there as well. So if someone else has to take care of Rio, it would be best if he were in his cage. Not to mention, yeah, leaving him alone unsupervised could be disasters waiting to happen. My little conure could destroy the house all by herself.

But, he sounds like a wonderful pet! I always wanted a macaw, too. I look forward to pics of him when you can take some.

I can't wait to see pictures! He sounds like a lot of fun.

I second Roxy on getting him more use to your cage, you never know when you'll have an emergancy and he'll need to be in it.

My Macaw is pretty quiet too, she doesn't scream (at least not while I'm home.) Though last night she did have a nightmare at 3am and woke us all up with her schreech. :(

Oh how very exciting for you! Congratulations!!!!

I can relate to the spouse bonding you are talking about. I finally decided 5 years after the loss of my dearly loved fully flighted cockatiel, whom escaped one afternoon when I was walking out the door. So yes...it does happen, even with the most dilligent parront owners. :( Been in and out of that door thousands of times....

Anyway, on a whim, I just HAD to have another bird and I knew EXACTLY what I wanted...another cockatiel, but a male lutino. I wasn't willing to wait either...so when the bug hit February 17th last year, I jumped in my car and went immediately to the nearest pet store and as luck would have it, they had Lutino Cockatiel.

I didn't ask questions other than, is he tame at all??? They were pretty sure it was male and he'd step up and sit on your finger. He had a broken blood feather and looked pretty ratty overall, beautiful color, but not very healthy looking feathers. The employee said he'd been in a fight with the other tiel.

I really didn't care, I knew I could give this baby a great home and said, Good enough, box him up!

So my Spouse comes home from work and I have the cage and my new cockatiel sitting on the dining room table. "LOOK! Honey...LOOK what I got today!" :D

He opens the cage door and get's the bird out and takes it upstairs and hangs out with it while I get dinner.

Within 24 hours I knew without a doubt that this cockatiel was definitely a female and was absolutely IN LOVE with my Spouse!

On February 17th, Friday, We'll have had her a year and oh what a joy she's been!

I envision her with long black eye lashes that she flutters at my spouse every time she sees him. Now, mind you...I do ALL the care taking, I feed, water, clean the cage, he does NONE of that, all he does is hang out with her. Everytime I reach in the cage, she sneers at me and makes this baby whine/cry sound...sooo funny!

But when my spouse reaches in...She just flutters her eyes and jumps right up on his hand! Never making a sound! ROFLOLOLOL!!

She does not bite me, she jumps on my finger too...but only AFTER she's made the whinny cry sound.

She's also the "Queen" bird in our home as you can see by the short little slide show video "Cockatiels Rule." (link on my signature line) I see her personality shining through in the pictures :D

Your Rio sounds amazing! Lucky, Lucky YOU!

Toni

THANKS :) He's a sweetheart. His cage is enormous! I wish he loved it as much as we do lol. He prefers his java tree hands down (our my hubby's shoulder). We've been making an effort to have him spend more time in his cage the last few days to get him more used to it (and we added about $150 worth of toys to it as well, which seems to have helped!).

Awwww... he's just soooo gorgeous..
