CAG - Bobby 07-14
My wife and I had an emergency trip out of state for a family emergency and left that required us to find a bird sitter out of our friends and family.

We left Bobby, and our house, in the care of some friends of my wife and gave them the run of the place for the days that we were to be gone.

We came home to find Bobby acting a little strange, he was breathing very hard, his beak open and he seemed to be a little unsteady on his feet. Concerned, I called our avian vet, and he told us to get there as fast as possible.

Of course we rushed out the door, Bobby in his favorite towel in my wife's lap.

He never made it to the office.

We later learned that the couple that we had sit our house had decided to bring a non-stick skillet over to cook with despite our warnings. They thought that we were being overly cautious.

We hadn't even had him that long and now he's gone. The house is so quiet now and I never realized how much I would miss him now that he's not here.

OMG....I'm so sorry to hear.....That's the downfall with people that don't understand the danger those things cause and they think we're being overly cautious. I hope they know what they've done caused Bobby his life. I'm truly sorry!!!! RIP Bobby.....

Oh no I'm so sorry to hear.. that is awful.. Atleast you were there and he was in his favorite towel.. There was absolutely nothing you could have done, I wish people would listen when they're appropriately warned.
Sending happy thoughts to you and your family, I'm sure the family emergency was stressful enough without Bobby being in danger..
Again, so sorry it happened the way it did. I wish I could offer more comfort for you, it's truly heartbreaking.
Keeping you and your family in my thoughts.

I am SO sorry that Bobby had to pay the price for those people's stupidity and ignorance :( Only bird owners, committed to their birds, truly understand and, more importantly, take on board, the dangers to them :(

Fly free, little Bobby!

I'm so sorry. That is a horrible thing to have happen. I hope they are willing to cover the cost of a new bird whenever you are ready along with the vet and burial. Hopefully you have not also lost a friendship along with everything else but I'd be hard to overcome something like this. My prayers are with you.

Wow.

So sorry to hear about bobby. I hope they cover any costs you need help with (new bird, more toys, new cage, whatever). They owe it to you.

If they had been the least bit apologetic about it, we'd be able to get over this, not trust them ever again, but probably would be able to stay friends.

They won't claim any responsibility whatsoever, said that he was sick and dying before they even got there.

Don't get me wrong, Bobby was a screamer and liked to bite and everything, but damn if he wasn't entertaining to at least watch climb around his huge cage and tease the cat.

I want another bird, but I don't know if I'm ready to see another Grey for a while, it's going to take some thinking and long conversations with my wife.

Did they vet him?

Get his cause of death confirmed. Make them pay for the cost of confirming death. And the cost of a new bird.

If it's not Teflon poisoning, apologize to them. If it is - which I'm sure it is, why would they cook if he was sick?- they owe you SOMETHING - more than just an apology. Some sort of mental compensation. Or the cost of him!

Seriously. What's wrong with some people?

I agree wholeheartedly !

What they should do and what they are going to do are two very different things.

Yes, it was PTFE poisoning, the vet said it was a classic case.

Needless to say, we're devastated at the loss of our little boy.

I am so sorry for your loss :( At least Bobby passed in the arms of those who loved him and is flying free now. I can't imagine what was going through these peoples heads if you specifically instructed them not to use something so toxic to your bird. And to them blame you for leaving them with a "sick" bird and not apologizing for anything- that speaks strongly to the character and type of people they are. If the necropsy shows it was from the teflon, I would go after them for the costs of the vet bills and more importantly, animal neglect and abuse resulting in death. Seriously, if you instructed them not to, and they did and it killed him, let them have a charge for animal abuse on their record. Society doesn't look kindly on animal abusers. No amount of money can ever bring your bird back, and you can't replace an individual, but you can give him a good chomp of justice to the people who harmed him. Even if Bobby died of natural causes, the way they have treated you is unacceptable and NOT as "friends" should. I know if anyone showed such blatant disrespect to my animals, whether the harmed them or not, they would NEVER be welcome in my home again.

That's the saddest story: I'm so sorry your Bobby is lost to you! I'm even sorrier those awful people were so arrogant to think they knew better than you how to care for your bird. All I can suggest is that what goes around comes around and there will be an awakening for them some day. You may not be there to see it, but I feel sure something will happen to make them realise what they cost Bobby and you. :(

Rest in peace, Bobby: you were a Good Bird. XX

While as good as it would make me feel to go after them, my wife and I just want to move on and not dwell on it. They have been told, in no uncertain terms, that we are no longer friends, acquaintances or anything of the kind, and that they are never welcome near our family again.

As hard as it is, you and your wife is doing the right thing. Cause it would lead to a long drawn out fight that never ends. Sometimes it's best to drop it and ignore the ignorant. But it's sad cause they caused the death of Bobby!

I am so sorry for your loss:( RIP Bobby and fly free, beautiful boy.
