WC Senegal parrots

Hello everyone! I'm new to the forum but not certainly to bird keeping. So last week I was at the pet market (we have a market in Kuwait that has most of the pet shops in the country). And I find in one bird shop a few cages full of Senegals. And they were ridiculously cheap, 8KD a piece witch is ~26USD! At that price I'm assuming that they are wild imports, plus I didn't find any that had a band on it. They looked like they were adults because of their coloring.

So the question is: Should I get some? What to look for if I decided to?

I have kept and bred several species over the years but not Senegals.
Are they aggressive? Easily frightened? Or stubborn?

If I decided to get them I want to get a male and a female and put them in separate caged until it's the right time to put them together in one cage.

Are you wanting to get the birds as a business venture, or for personal pets? Most folks here are in the latter category, although I know some do breed.

In any event, I would suggest that you use the SEARCH tab aboe. Maybe try key words like "breeding Senegals", etc. It's a really good engine.

Thank you for replying. I am planning on getting a male and female and pair them and get them breeding, then hand-raise the chicks and keep them.
The birds are wild and I don't think they would make great pets without extensive training.

I just wanted some quick advice, that's why I came here.

First of all all birds that are wild are going to be frightened and perhaps aggressive. If you are going to breed them that won't matter, given time and good treatment of them they will settle. You can't tell the sex of Senegal s without a DNA test, so unless they have DNA papers you wont know until you have done the DNA tests yourself. Here in Ireland we wouldn't normally buy birds from pet shops, we would go to the bird breeders. If that isn't an option for you I would suggest since the birds you are talking about are so cheap, and if you have the space I would buy a few birds put them all together where they have enough space, and sooner or later them will pair up themselves. You could get a false pair, two birds of the same sex that are just friends, although that would be rare.

DNA testing is out of the question, nobody offers it locally, but some shops ship samples to get tested but that is very expensive to do.

But what about the vent coloring? Males yellow, females green and yellow?

I'm afraid I don't have the space and money to get a big group of them, since I keep all of my birds indoors.

Females have mostly green under the tail but so do immature Senegal s. Adult females can also have a mix of yellow and green. Males can have yellow under the tail but can also have a hint of green. It is not 100 percent proof, but from what you say that is the only way you can go, so good luck with it.

im replying since that seems to be an issue---i have an interest in meyers/senegals and to me WC means West Coast...where I live, so i thought it might be relevant...and I clicked and read. I know nothing about them so advising or posting an answer isnt really going to benefit anyone...but thanks for posting and consider this a bump

With so many unwanted parrots out there, why breed to get a baby, why not just buy the baby? Before you say babies aren't available in your area, you do realize that babies grow into adults eventually. Actually, it happens very quickly. So why bring another life into the world when you could spend the time that you would have spent raising a baby to build a solid relationship with an adult?

I have a feeling no one is answering you because these are wild caught birds that are shoved into tiny cages, dozens in one cage at a time, and sold for very little money like cheap, wholesale goods rather than animals. Then you say you want to buy a male and a female, force them in a cage together simply to be breeders and give you chicks, because these are only wild birds and you don't have the time to train them. So essentially you are wanting advice on buying birds snatched out of the wild and thrown into little cages so that you can do the same to 2 of them (even though it's obvious you don't know what you're doing since you cannot visually sex Senegals as the vent coloring is not at all reliable, and even if you're lucky enough to grab a male and a female out of the tiny cage of 50 there is still no guarantee at all that they will breed, they may hate each other or simply tolerate each other)...

Sorry, but I'm guessing no one wants to help you because you're admitting to simply wanting to use two birds stolen from the wild and then what, you release them? Or breed them to death? Or, more than likely you'll get two of the same sex or a male and female that won't mate, so then what will you do with them?
