Mavericks Invitational | 2013/2014

Mavericks competition today and tomorrow! I almost drove up, but traffic is absolutely terrible. I should of driven up yesterday and stayed with my grandparents who live there. It's only a 40 minute drive, but the way it is now it would take hours.

All in the area the waves have been crazy, a friend of mine is a surfer and is out there surfing almost daily(not at mavericks, he surfed there once and wiped out horribly). Yesterday morning he caught a 18'-20' wave that he wiped out on, he was pushed all the way to the ocean floor and bounced off the reef. He's totally sore, but back out there again.

Enjoy the competition!

OMG, surfers are so brave! That is so scary! My older son surfs, and I have to try to not worry about him, between the big waves and sharks.

Did you see the Youtube clip of the dolphins surfing in the waves the other day, at a surf competition in Ventura? That was so cool! :D

Thanks for the Mavericks live stream link!

They are brave, I'd be scared to surf!

I did see that clip, pretty amazing!

Surfing was my way of life for about 25 years...

I surfed Mavericks exactly ONCE - worst wipeout of my life. Got dragged through the boneyard... came up on the wrong side of the rocks, and spent about 45 minutes in the impact zone...

And that was a SMALL - (15-18 foot) day!!!

I never went back. It took me almost two years to go out in anything over 12 foot again...

Nowadays, I stick to skydiving...

When my friend went out he caught a huge wave, since he was towed on with a jet ski(which your not supposed to do), the wipe out was pretty bad. I don't think he'll ever go there again. he still surfs almost daily

That's terrifying you were caught in the boneyard! and being in the impact zone for so long! Jeeze, I'm glad you still with us D:

Sad, but true, I was a young, naiive 19 year old at the time, who thought he was way better than he actually was...

The board I was riding was 8 foot - WHICH I THOUGHT WAS TOO LONG ON THE BEACH, BUT TURNED OUT TO BE WAY TOO SHORT, AND WHICH SNAPPED IN HALF ON TAKE OFF...

Yeah, after about 20 minutes to half an hour, I essentially thought I was dead...
and oddly enough, that was the only thing that made me relax enough to get through the beating. (The more relaxed you are, the less oxygen you burn on the hold downs.)

I HAVE NEVER BEEN HIT SO FRIGGIN HARD BY A WAVE IN MY ENTIRE LIFE, BEFORE OR SINCE. I HAD DROWNING NIGHTMARES FOR SIX MONTHS AFTERWORDS!

And like I said, after that, it took me two years to get back on the horse, and go out in any kind of size again... and I didn't actually take off on a wave until a cleanup set came through, and I got nailed by it. And actually, it wasn't all that bad. In fact, it was kind of easy compared to what I had already survived... after that I relaxed and started surfing again.

I was actually out at Rockaway the day that Mark Foo died...

I drove by Maverick's on the way home, and there was Ken Bradshaw, in the parking lot, sobbing... it was all very eerie.

on the live stream, they just said these waves have 40-50' faces D: HUGE

Well, saying it, and having it be true are two different things.

That looks more like 20-25 foot to me...

The day I was out, it was around 18-ish, so that is around what I was dealing with.
