Hi everyone,

Nearly 3 years ago, we walked into the petstore for some supplies for our tiels and came home with our conure, Franklin.

We had absolutely zero intention of buying a pet of any type and certainly no intention of buying a conure. Knew nothing about them as pets, done zero research, prior to...nothing, he was completely unplanned.

For us, this union has worked out wonderful, but it has not been without it's challenges...of course. I mean...he IS a conure after all

So this post is just for curiosity sakes...does our situation make up the average or the unique?

Toni

Planned--but for a different conure. Then I fell I love with Kumar after about 4 visits...so unplanned with this individual.

Phoe was unplanned as well. I saw him on Kijiji and had to have him:)

Planned, researched, on a breeder's waiting list for 9 months. Longest wait of my life! :p

Unplanned for my conures :) My Sun at a bird show ,my Greencheek at Petsmart[they get me everytime :) and my Nanday we heard was being starved in a garage :(

I guess you could say unplanned I was thinking of a smaller bird not sure what kind of bird and seen the add for Aztec Conures , met Cookie and here he is with me and he has been a great little bird

All mine were planned purchases! The only unplanned purchases in the house are my mothers birds.

Aaaawwwwwww....melt me!:rainbow1:

-I was planning a green cheek conure for my first bird but had no luck finding one for months. So I was going to settle for a beautiful blue love bird I had seen at Earl May instead. Literally on my way to go purchase a lovie, my mom calls me and says she had found a green cheek on craigslist for $200 (I think it was) with cage and that she had already contacted the owner and they had replied. So I turned my butt around and went straight home to arrange a pick up.
-And that's how I got my Meeka, she was planned but unplanned too lol.
-Morpheus on the other hand was definitely unplanned. Poor little un-hand tamed, shy, little guy at petsmart that had been there for 4 months (if I remember what the sales girl told me right). I couldn't say no, he was even marked down in price.
-Shyra, and her siblings, weren't really planned for but I was prepared and happy when they finally did arrive. (Untill Meeka and Morpheus had babies I wasn't for sure that Meeka was a girl and Morhpeus a boy because I or previous 'owners' never had them DNA sexed)

-So planned... unplanned? lol

My conures were all planned acquisitions.
My senegals and amazon were semi planned. They were species that I wanted, but I wasn't looking for specifically when I got them. I went to bird fairs quite a bit between '97 and '04, and I always went knowing that I was either definitely not coming home with a new bird no matter what or knowing that if I found bird I could bring it home.

Maui- Our first bird was a cinnamon GCC that we loved dearly and lost a few months back. She was unplanned but picked me, so how could I say no? I miss her more than I can say.

Indy- our 6 month old sun conure was a definite planned purchase! After we lost maui I couldn't be without a bird in the house...it was so quiet and empty :( So, I went to the rescue and talked with the ladies there about what I was looking for. I was initially going in for another GCC but they showed me this baby sun that was still being weaned and she was so sweet! I fell in love again, so we put a deposit on her to hold her and I went and visited for a month before she was ready to leave so we could start bonding. So planned conure but also unplanned on what kind? lol

Somewhat unplanned. Gizmo kept trying to get my daughter's and my attention, so I went home to research about bird ownership. One month later Gizmo came home to live with us. That was 1.75 years ago, and now I have 7! Our love for Gizmo fueled our desire to want to bring more fids into our flock, some of which were planned; some of which were not!

The fist(kiva)was planned .
The second one Fury was given to me by my parents, claiming that kiva looked lonely.
I had her for 3 weeks.
After that came the unexpected hope, but very much wanted.
And then yet again my parents came with pixel.
All in all ,i never paid for any of the birds,my parents give them all.

We are on the waiting list for our Cinnamon GCC at the moment - 5 weeks to go!! WOOOOHO!!!

Initially (coz I havent had a birdie for about 5 years - i sold my fids when I had to put my baby galah down) we wanted to pick "an easy" bird like budgie...which changed to cockatiel but then changed to "something else" that was a bit more challenging.

Lots of research later, I narrowed down my choices to some sort of conure or quaker again..... I've been told no more cockatoos by hubby HAHA

So we then started researching conures, and green cheeks have stolen my heart! We visited an aviary and I play with a bub and an adult, and I"m totally smitten!

Then looked into breeders and we're now on the list :D So little JImmy is totally planned and we are so excited to be birdy parents again!!

Unplanned.

I was researching crimson bellied conures as I knew it was the next bird I wanted to get, once we had room for a new pet in a few years. While looking for a conure forum, I found a forum talking about a craigslist ad for a CBC looking for a new home. I clicked on it and I couldn't even believe that she was in my area! Showed her to my husband and picked her up that Saturday!

My first conure was given to me as a gift.

My second and third conures were "evil" little birds, that had been rehomed on five prior occasions down at the rescue, and took a sudden liking to my daughter.

So, none of the conures were planned.

But they were a lot of fun...

Unplanned-

I went to a breeders house to look at her weaned cockatiels. While waiting for her to bring them out, she had 4 baby GCC out that she had just finished handfeeding as they were unweaned. I looked at them a while and one was just looking back seeming to say "hold me", so I did. I was NOT (in my mind) getting one as I told my daughter I was getting a cockatiel. After holding every cockatiel, none felt right, not likethe GCC did. The breeder said that she normally does not sell any birds unweaned. I had driven a long way and I was confident in my ability to continue hand feeding the baby GCC since I raised a wild mockingbird baby I found abandoned by its mom and had handfed it for 5 weeks. So..I drove home with baby Fern, handfed her 4 more weeks and could not be any happier with my decision!

I planned to get a little poicephalus parrot but ended up adopting a nanday. Not really planned but worth it tbh.

My daughter (riddick07) comment that her conures were planned... add to that begged, bribed, demanded, etc... Actually I think both of her green cheeks were presents (Xmas and birthday) and then her new sun, Loki, was an Xmas present this past Xmas. We drove 5 hours each way for that dang bird, so he was definitely planned!!!

Fred was unplanned. We just stopped in a LBS and seen him by his self in a tank with his clutch mates. After a hour of holding him and he fell asleep in my hand he was ours. Didn't come home right away as he was still young but it turned into a unplanned fathersday gift. :D
