Sunny South Africa !!!
Parrots
African "Grey"
"Mishka"
Male
7 Years old
People assume I was lucky to get a bird that will talk

I am blessed to be a guardian to Mishka, an AG, 2 years and 4 months old. I handreared her from 6 weeks old.

She is a lovable, expressive chatterbox, who loves clowning around 24/7
Her ability to talk is amazing. :D

Believe me it has taken hours and hours of talking. I spoke to her all the time, whatever I was doing, she knew about it.
Repeating words, sometimes for weeks, before I got any response. Making Cd's, recording my voice, saying words and phases as we went along. I started making the Cd's when she was 3 months old. This weekend, her CD collection grew from 13 Cd's to 19.
(LoL more Cd's than my 2 teenager sons)
At about 10am she gets so excited, knowing a CD is going to be played. :11:
When I go out during the day, I leave a CD playing for her.
She talks and says the words etc. along with the CD.
When at home, while the CD is playing. I say the words or sentences along with her.

During Mishka's "Happy Hour" at night time, she sits on my lap, we play
talk and sing. Going over new words etc.

Was I lucky to get a bird that will talk

I was lucky to get a bird that is so happy ,content and willing to learn to talk !!! :grey:

You are such a good Mom. You wait until her sexual maturity!!

She will try and try.

LoL as long as she carries on talking.......

Seriously, when I first got a parrot, people said I would never cope, after having that accident with my right hand, where the nerves were completely damaged.
I handle Mishka only with my right hand. She is ever so gently, I think she knows I have a problem.
More humans have hurt my hand, and still do..... just by touching my hand.
If we can get through this daily, we can tackle anything and everything.
As for the sexual maturity part, we will get through it, reading lots of info etc... ready for the next step ...... ;)

You are very lucky for a bird who is willing to learn to talk

She is always willing to learn, but I reckon she has no choice.....
I am a chatterbox at the best of times.

I think I have spoken more to Mishka, than I have ever spoken to a human.

AG's are very fast learners. My 2.5 yo picks up words all the time when I am not even trying to teach him a new word. I have to be careful what I say around him!

We all have to be extremely careful LoL

One day while cooking I burnt my finger, and said oh s..t oh s..t
Mishka caught on immediately and started saying the word.
Had to act quickly and said oh shower oh shower

Now when I walk into the kitchen she says oh shower oh shower :D

Thank goodness they don't know what we are thinking haha

Having teenagers in my home was always going to be a challenge with a bird that likes to talk but so far we have been really careful and very lucky. Today I had a reality check when I took Puffin to work!

Often when my kids are playing with him he gets a bit nippy and they tell him off. Today we were having a bbq for an employee who was leaving and one of my employees was trying to get Puffin to step up ( no chance when Puffin is on my shoulder!) I told the employee that they had no hope but they kept trying and Puffin fluffed himself up and said " STOP IT!"

Everyone cracked up laughing so naturally Puffin thought he had learnt a new trick and all we heard for the next hour was "Stop it"

LoL that is so cool.
Puffin sure has a mind of his own...... :D
In future when you want him to do something, he might just say "stop it"

It seems this is his favourite word now! No matter what we so or say we get "Stop it" !
It just sounds so funny you cannot help but laugh which naturally makes him say it more!

LoL we just love them so mcuh !!!!!

The more you laugh, makes them repeat and repeat the words !!!!
They sure know how to clown around.

Mishka's favorite saying now is, knock on the door and makes the sound
I say to her Mishka poopies in the potty, she says Mishka poopies in the potty, knock on the door haha

I wonder is they know just how entertaining they are

My husband has a friend who has a male Eclectus, whenever her son finishes practicing his drumming in the garage Oscar says "Oh thank God they're gone"
