I had just watched this video and thought I would share it with all of you. A real eye opener and pretty sad at the same time.

Exotic Birds Campaign

This is something I have thought of, we are not supposed to have these animals as pets. Better laws could require parrot education classes before they buy reducing rescues. San Fran has passed laws forbiding live animal sales, most of the US think this is "lunatic legislation". But if someone is determined to own a parrot, they will find a way. We as a population do not take care of our elderly, abuse our children, etc. I don't hold out much hope that suddenly they will be enlightened about pet birds. It troubles me that we so often tell people interested in parrots to "get a baby bird, they come w/less issues" I'm sure this is true, but feel they get their own issues before cycling into the shelters.

The problem about those of us who try to do best for our birds dying & leaving them unprotected is something we can do something about. Make a plan now, & hope that your trust is justified in the new caregiver. Terrifying, I could not imagine Merlin looking for me & not know what happened to his home. I can almost understand people who euthanize their pets upon their death. :(

I couldn't agree more with every single thing you said.

I have already made a plan for when I pass one day and, thankfully, I have 2 out of the 4 children that I have that are as fascinated with our loves (parrots). One will be starting college next year to become an aviary veternarian, her love is so strong.

I just wish there was a way to make everyone have a plan....to be prepared for the unexpected...and to think of their pets as well as themselves.

This Video made me cry.. Before I even looked for my babies here My Daughter and I talked about how long they live and if I pass away she said with out a doubt she would take care of them.. She calls them her brothers and sisters. She has a hand in feeding and careing for my Ruby and bebe and the cockatiels as well Though My Grandson says the cockatiels are his and he enjoys helpin me feed them and clean there cage and talks to them ever day. Of corse he is 3 and can not do it by himself yet.

I can not imagin getting a pet and then just getting rid of them We have a dog that is over 19 years old In My family a pet is a part of the family for life it is a commetment to them as they did not ask us to get them just like a child did not ask to be born.

Sorry to be long winded this is just one of the topics that hurts my heart and upsets me..

But it is good info to know so thank you for shareing the link.
