First and Foremost Hello everybody my Name is James and I hail from the Great Lone Star State :)

Anyways, I've been a long time "Lurker" here in the Ekkie forums.
Personally I feel they are the most beautiful Parrot Species and are just the right size for me. I remember as a kid I would beg and beg for one.. but coming from a large family we never really had alot of extra money to spend. Now that I'm 26 with my own house I wanted to indulge my childhood dream and buy an Ekkie :).

To make a long story short, I was browsing through the craigslist ads for pets with the intention of finding a responsible ekkie breeder ( A LOOOOOOONG SHOT, I KNOW.. ) I found nothing.. but I did see a posting for an eclectus that needed to be rehomed.. I inquired immediately about her. unfortunately the owner of the bird did not know that Ekkie parrots are sexually dimorphic as she referred to her as a he, and apparently her boyfriend and her had been living in a house with no utilities since the end of November.. they weren't too far away from me (about a 20 minutes drive) I went to meet them at their house.. I had honestly never been that horrified at the smell and unsanitary conditions that this couple had been living in.. The bird had obviously not been out of its cage for a while.. as the dropping were piled about 4 inches high.. I'm not here to judge anybody so we'll leave it at that... but I just couldn't leave Veronica there after seeing her miserable condition..

They originally wanted $600 dollars.. (Which I was ready to pay) but they seemed desperate for the money.. They let her go for $250. Obviously this bird has seen multiple homes as the couple stated that they had her for about 4 months.. I honestly was enraged that they would keep a living creature in such conditions.. but I paid them for the bird and left.

As soon as I got home I scheduled a Vet Appointment for a health/wellness check along with blood tests. We have our appointment this coming Saturday at 10:30 AM.

Veronica, seem curious as soon as I let her out of her travel kennel.. she wasn't shy to step up and even said a few Naughty Words.. Mainly "Female-Dog" and "Cigarettes" She also was very hungry.. i fed her medium Roudybush Pellets Soaked in low-sodium chicken broth and she gobbled them up lightning fast..
I work for a pretty big produce distributor here in Dallas so i always have all sort of fruits and veggies readily available.
I grated her some carrots, chopped a few grapes, a bit of apple.
she absolutely loved it... (Shes staring at me right now while holding a strawberry with her right foot)

She seems reluctant to eat her greens, tried endive, spinach, boston lettuce, regular iceberg, and romaine.

Anyways I'd love to share before and after pictures.. This is through the span of 1 week (I acquired her last Thursday the 24 of January).

To me its like night and day basically. Notice her feather on her before picture. They seem greasy and she reeked of bird feces and cigarette smoke. I warmed up the shower and let her go crazy with the water.
She was kind of scared at the sound of running water.. but she lost her fear and started to bathe. Her scent and feathers have improved drastically.

I hope her Vet check up goes well.. she is eating very well and her droppings look fine. she's very active and loves to shred newspaper and her toys... I'm very glad that she is a tame female Ekkie.
she loves for me to scratch her and has no problem with me handling her.

She seems to be going through a Molt right now.. I can't wait til her new feathers come in. She will be even more beautiful :)

Thanks for the advice! I've noticed that she likes warm food.. Maybe Im going to blanch the greens slightly so that they are kind of warm. I haven't tried broccoli yet..

Hi James, what a beautiful eclectus you have!! She is going to love you so much, her home is going to drastically change and I bet she is so excited to have a owner who truly cares about her. She looks stunning.

Can't wait to hear more updates, it's ace when someone can rehome a bird and make their life so much better. Look forward to seeing more!

Thank you for rescuing her! It makes me so mad when people make uneducated pet decisions, and then don't even bother to learn. I can't believe they didn't even know her sex, since she is an eclectus. Did they even google "eclectus"?

She looks soooo much better in the newer pictures. It looks like maybe she wasn't grooming at her old place, but started after you got her.

Just keep offering her a variety of foods. If she sees you eating it, she may be more likely to eat it also.

What a beautiful girl. I am so happy she met you, now she can live the life she deserves. Congratulations and thank you for sharing Veronica's story.

Wow what a difference a shower makes. She is beautiful. Congrats and welcome to the forum:)

WOW - what a difference in the photos. This was meant to be and she was waiting for you to come and take her away. Thank you for opening your home and heart to this lovely bird. Hope the vet visit goes without any issues.

Wow! thank you all for your kind reception and words. they are much appreciated. :)

I will keep y'all updated about her condition. I'm at work now but before i left i chopped her up some fruits (apple, starfruit, threw in a few coarse walnuts and of course her daily Roudybush Pellets.)

She is so well behaved (aside from her naughty vocabulary) and talks up a storm when we are watching a bit of TV or Youtube Videos.

I also Discovered that she is could be possibly potty trained. as she has only had a handful of booboo's outside her cage.

I can't wait til the crazy weather in Texas warms up a bit. I have a decent sized backyard and would love for her to get out there and explore..

Congrats on your new girl! She looks much better!

I just got a new girl too, she wasn't in a bad situation but was getting a mostly seed diet and was bare around her eyes. Since we've had her (two weeks today) you can see an improvement in all her feathers and she's starting to get her blue eye rings.

What a gorgeous bird, and I love her name, Veronica! She was meant to be with you! Good job :)

Thanks! her original name was Gamzeechi.. I want her to forget that name. So i renamed her Veronica (seems like a very strong feminine name) I want her to know that she started a new life with me and hope she can forget the trauma of her past.

Oh wow James, what a heartfelt story! I love your Veronica. I wish you the best Vet visit filled with only good news.

Lisa
