Valentino - Red Fronted Macaw - Hatched August 12, 2012
Today while I was working in my office I was not playing any music it was quiet and peaceful. Then I heard the rustling of paper for over a half hour. It sounded like someone was wrapping presents and the cuplrit was very involved in what he was doing because he was not talking to himself. I slowly went down the stairs to see what Valentino was doing and watch him playing with his adding paper roll toy. Every parrot I ever had loved this simple toy of taking a long SS chain and stringing it though some adding machine paper. Valentino did not even notice I was watching him. Later I took a picture of his masterpiece.

Later after Lupe came home I was telling her how My neice thinks Valentino is so huge. Maybe I am use to him and don't see my boy as huge but I decided to try to have Lupe take a picture of him lying on his back in my palm. I can barely wrap my fingers round him. I was too chicken to weigh him tonight.

"Hold him to you and cuddle him" Lupe asked me. So as he was smashed up against my chest enjoying some pets Lupe takes this picture

Later during dinner Valentino shared some peas with Lupe. He thought they were pistachios and was so excited. He takes the pea from Lupe and rolls it around in his beak then suddenly violently shakes his head with the pea parts flying everywhere. He refused to take another pea from her. It was not until I passed her the bowl that has the pistachios and she took one out to give him did he take the food from her. He is one smart cookie. He might of mistaken a pea for a pistachio once but you cannot fool him more than once.

Without my Valentino my days would be lonely and boring.

Love those pics of Valentino! He is sooo adorable in your hand & against you. His creation is unique, maybe you can market a new toy under his name.:D

Nice pictures :) Looks like you can do anything with him! Do you get all your birds from that lady you talk about?

Quite the artsy bird you have there,LOL. great idea btw.
And beautiful, he sure does love you

Gorgeous photos and he looks like he has a great imagination:) Do you use just any roll of paper? I thought I read somewhere that there is a kind that isn't safe to use, but I can't find where I read that. I have to make Willow one of those as she loves to shred paper.

beautiful lol he looks to be having some fun. when my grey was alive id give her a phone book in the bottum of the cage and one day she had paper up to her highest perche.. i couldnt believe it she destroyed a whole phone book in an hour and was so proud:p

He looks just the right size! I feel like I know him. You do such a great job of describing him to us.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. Valentino is a beautiful parrot and he knows it!

Turquoise - They already have paper roll toys on the market you can buy. I seen them encased in a hard plastic device where the parrot pulls out the paper though a slit. I didn't want to spend the money so when a wood toy on this really nice chain (which was a SS chain something I don't see very often) I saved the long SS chain and thread it though the spindle of a adding machine roll I get at a office supply store.

Pinklady - Valentino came from Wendy Craig. Although she has been breeding parrots for a very long time I did not find her until 2011. Her website has a lot of different parrots on it but now she only breeds CAG, BTM and RFM's. I have contemplated getting a BTM from her but Valentino is a lot of parrot for me as it is and although I would love a BTM also I do not think Lupe could handle one and both birds would fall on just me to conduct the training and handle them.

Savannah - I only use the non copy kind of adding machine paper. The type that has the carbon copy is probably what you are thinking about. I only use one ply. LOL That sounded like I am talking about toilet paper.

JT - I have contemplated hanging a phone book up against the back of the cage for Valentino to go nuts on but realized I have no phone books in the house. I might still do that to give him something to destroy. I had the adding machine roll in Joaquin my eclectus's cage and Lupe taught him how to unroll the paper so when I came home from work the whole bottom of the cage up to his first perch was filled with unrolled paper with the toy only displaying the spindle. I forbid Lupe to teach any more parrots how to do that.

I have caught Valentino rolling around on the grate with the paper like a puppy making his weird rabid outbreak monkey laugh. I love to see that he is happy.

I have one of the plastic case kind you are talking about for Parker my zon...the first day he had figured out how to open it and when I came home it looked like someone had snuck in and TPed his whole cage...I couldn't help but laugh

How many inches do you estimate Valentino is head to tail? He is a beautiful bird. I am thinking a mini macaw twelve to fifteen inches might be a good size for me.

Abigal not to scare you off but Valentino is way bigger than a mini macaw. He is even bigger than my Solomon Island Eclectus was who was at 348 grams. My mini macaws both the Noble and Illiger's were about half his size. They weighed at 210 grams and 248 grams where Valentino is now 474 grams before I feed him. Valentino may or may not go though another growth spurt.

Valentino's tail alone is 24 inches long. His feet are 3 inches long. I never had a bird with such huge feet. LOL. They feel weird too like plastic but if you rub them opposite of the "scales" it is very rough and kind of gross. His pads are not rough but not nearly as soft as my mini macaws were though. And the tongue. OMG. It is LONG and SKINNY with this weird head looking thing at the tip and both flesh color AND black/grey. I solved the white tongue thing I thought was a problem because I figured out when he takes a shower or eats something really wet it discolors to a very light grey. It is kind of like when our hands and feet shrivel up after shower or pool and are lighter.

I think I went on too much about the freaky physical things of my RFM. Valentino is the largest parrot I have lived with so for me everything is .....well....larger. Even his poops are huge. I will not discuss the morning poop.

I don't think a RFM is considered a mini macaw. Their voices are VERY LOUD and their wingspan is about three feet. Neither of my mini macaws did the large macaw growl or the I am possessed sounds but Valentino does. Too me Valentino is pure macaw.

Thanks, for the reply. I was thinking he was alot bigger then a mini macaw. It sounds like you do like Macaws alot. I do not plan to rush out and get a large Macaw like Valentino (as pretty as he is). But I have my mind made up on getting a mini macaw.

Abigal the RF macaw is the smallest in the large macaw category. I am getting one as soon as he weans. I have a green wing some my RF is going to look very small. But compared to a mini they are very large.

Noblemacaw that morning poop thing cracks me up. I know what you mean tho. Try having a GW. Its like an elephant. Well maybe not that bad but you get the comparison. lol
