My dad has a pionus and he's one of the silliest little birds I've ever seen. I think his wings may have been cut too short as a little one because his balance is awful, but he's active and friendly without being insanely loud.

However, one sort of comical habit I've noticed is that whenever we vacuum... he takes a bath. Just tries to force his chubby self into his water dish (a little small for his entire body) and starts throwing water all over himself and bathing.

I know this isn't a particularly bad thing, but I was wondering if anyone else's pionus did this? It's both hilarious and adorable.

Lots of birds do this :) most convincing theory I've heard so far is that the vibrations mimic a storm and excite bathing instincts :)

Bumble chirps her fool head off when I vacuum. My theory? The first time I vacuumed after I got her, the dogs were here. One of them goes nuts every time - I think she learned from the dog that you must make as much noise as possible when the evil machine is turned on!

Haha yes! My inlaws 'too and both of the IRN's...it's how I get them to take baths!!!

(still can't get them out of the water bowl though...)

Absolutely! Mine either begin to bathe or chatter loudly to drown out the noise!

Nope, Salty just cocks his head and looks at it. For him, a few schritzes with the water bottle, and he will run in and take a bath in his water bowl. Like most, I cant get him to use other stuff for bathing. Good thing i got the largest dia water bowl available when I set his cage up.

I just have to present water, take a shower, be near a sink and he's already wet.....

YES, vacuum means "cue the bath" :)

It's always funny to hear stories about birds who do and don't react like this. Timcanpy is a bit of a weirdo and starts singing whenever the vacuum is on. Moles the Pionus bathes, Joey just stares at it like it's offended his mother, and then Maple... hops. She hops around the cage in a circle. It's bizarre, but always fun to hear about.

Smokey wouldn't bathe, but she would run around on her roof top, yelling at it and trying to lean over and bite whatever part she could if I got too close to her.

When a storm rolls in, the atmospheric pressure changes. When we turn on a vacuum, it also changes the atmospheric pressure.

At least, this has been my theory. I found a picture that basically says a tornado is like a giant vacuum!

For my birds, it depends on their mood... some of them will while others wont. Just because they bathe one time while the vacuum is running doesn't mean they will the next time.

I know when the wife vacuums I have an uncontrolable urge to take a shower!
