- Sunday/gold capped hybrid conures: mystic and gypsy
Sun: Paisley
Mystic and Gypsy have come a loooong way I think. They are now not biting nearly ever. I regularly walk by and do up up and they step up rather than trying to bite. I let them spend time on me as well and they were not biting. However, I was trying not to pressure them and let them come along slowly so I was not getting them OFF their cage very much. BUT, around Wednesday I noticed that suddenly they refused to be near me if I walked up to the cage. They would hop and fly around and do everything in their power to get farthest away from my hand.
SOOOO, I said you know what...they are getting used to being on the cage so it's time to actually do some real bonding! I stepped them up and took them to shower, which they sorta like, and then sat with them in the window to dry in the sun and petted, fed treats, cuddled, let them "love on" my hair, and in general got them used to me. I did this for about an hour one day, and two hours today.
ALREADY I can see a difference. Gypsy was coming along really nicely, after regressing the worst after wing clipping and mystic was still being very shy, and still is a little more shy than Gypsy. BUT as I was typing my husband interrupted me and was by the cage and they didn't even scoot away from him! They havent yet let him touch them! Now he just touched MYSTIC! Woooo. So I walked over there and scratched her beak! YAY! Anyway, I am so happy. I am definitely going to continue with the window bonding. I had decided to give them the space because when I was trying to bond with them before I felt like I was pushing them and it was scaring them more. So I backed off for a little while and I guess it worked! I would walk by and say "what's the babies doing?" "they doing nothing, They eating, they playing?" Or any other random chatter, and stop to do up up or something light and interactive but not pushy. And that was it. I guess they got used to me and my boys!
OOOO, I am so happy! Very encouraged. Patience wins! I let them guide me and it worked.
There was a time or two when I was covering their cage that they got hissy and snappy and I took the top off and took them to another room and laddered them for a few minutes. It worked each time. They were more calm when they went back in. Although I think I realized that they were being very aggressive over the happy hut???? I don't know why. I never really tried to touch it. But each time I put the top back on with happy hut attached they became super alert and jumping around then when I tried to walk up to the cage they would begin hissing and snapping. So I reached in and was trying to calm them and play a little and i touched the hut to play peekaboo and Mystic went beserk. I took the hut and they calmed down instantly. I am not sure if I should put it back or not. They didn't sleep there, just climbed on it and played. Thoughts on that???
I decided that taming TWO nearly wild conures has been and will be very rewarding!!! It was a challenge and I stuck with it. I'm kinda proud of myself.
Also, they love fresh broccoli. So, mostly, all is well and great!!! I love them to bits!
