Cally is a wild caught DYH who is between 52 and 62. She was living in a shed in a galvanized cage when she joined us 2 years ago.
She is still missing feathers, but there are several new ones. She will probably struggle with plucking for the rest of her life. She had scaly mites really bad, and that was taken care of. She does have gout, but as of now it is under control with diet.
The first picture is her first night with us, the second was today. She had no life in her eyes for the longest time, but now seems quite happy. We love her so much and are thrilled with how well she is doing.

Re: Update on Cally

Blessings of every origin upon you who are helping this lovely old diva!
She even makes the Rickeybird seem young. I am awe-struck... (stricken?)... BOTH!

Re: Update on Cally

I can't imagine everything she has seen in her lifetime. It breaks my heart to think she was taken from her home in the wild. I'm so glad we brought her and Ki home with us.

Re: Update on Cally

How sad, little Cally's living conditions were. She looks like a happy little birdie in that second pic.

Re: Update on Cally

Wow, Cally looks so much happier! That's great to see such a difference Terry :).

Re: Update on Cally

Oh yeah, first pic the eyes are downcast and despondent, second image she's looking toward the camera. Great job Terry and Cally!

This is why I call Terry "Rescue Queen Extraordinare!"

Re: Update on Cally

How wonderful to see how much she's improved, Terry! I remember those very first pics of her in her former home. I love the alert look in her eyes in the new pic and how lovely to see those beautiful new feathers. You are an inspiration, I'm so glad you brought Ki and Cally home to stay. It may not be the wild but it's a warm, safe place with people who love them exactly as they are.

Re: Update on Cally

Wow Terry I am just in awe in the difference between the two pics .. the beak, feet & feather improvement is so obvious but what really stands out is the body stance and the expression in her eyes now.
You really are an inspiration and an awesome example of what rescuing should be. Amazing job

Re: Update on Cally

Thank you all so much for your kind words. Truly, I think her improved diet, safe cage and no chaos happening around her has really done the trick. We all talk so much about diet, and it is so exciting to actually see what a huge role that it plays in a bird's general appearance and health.

Re: Update on Cally

Now I'm about to cry! thank you for giving her a better life, she looks so much better. My heart hurts every time I think about one of these sweet birds suffering.

Terry...as I was looking at both of Callies pictures,I was also thinking about her tootsies..the first pic they looked dead and gray to me,and in the second, all pink and pretty :) I thought for a moment it was just a light thing, obviously that is not the case! A proper diet and some TLC goes a long way. She is beautiful..you are doing an awesome job!!!!

Re: Update on Cally

Thank you, Jim...actually you were right about the light, her feet are a normal colour now, the pink was a reflection from strawberries in her dish I think. After Hubby took the picture I ran down to check her feet..lol

I just wanted to add an update on Ki here too. He is Cally's buddy. In their previous home, both their mates had died so they were out together to free up a cage. They are completely bonded, and Ki is incredibly protective of her. He is a RLA and is now 9 years old. He has never grown any real feathers back on his chest or his head, and I doubt he ever will at this point. He has a scissor beak which was quite pronounced when he first came to us. He had it trimmed 3 times in the first year, but diet seems to have slowed the need for that. He hasn't had it dremeled now for over a year.
The first picture is him in the galvanized cage he was in the day we picked them up. Second picture was yesterday.

Wow, she looks amazing now! Great job with her Terry! This girl was lucky to have found you and so deserved a home like yours! :)

Awesome Terry. Ki looks much more relaxed and heathy so glad you took em in and they've got you & each other

Terry, you should have scooped up the toys I was offering for free, on the toy exchange, so the rescue guys have some decent toys to play with. Anything my guy rejects is yours for the asking ( ie you get first dibbs).

Thanks Al, they actually have a few toys you can't see in there, we have to be careful with having very many as Ki completely freaks out.
