My home town has just declared a state of emergency due to an extreme forest fire on the out skirts of town. A small area on the west side of town has been evacuated so far. The smoke is horrendous so as such I have all the windows closed and am using fans to control the heat.

My question is this If I become an evacuee my sister who lives 45 min drive away has agreed to take us and the kids in. It means putting the birds in a travel cage. What should I do to protect them when they are outside for a few minutes. They will have to breathe in smoke from the fire for a very short time.

Any suggestions? I'm at a loss as to what to do.

I would think putting heavy blankets over their travel cages until you have them in the car would suffice. keep us posted and stay safe!

I would wet towels and hang over the cages to block all air. Remove once safely in the car. I hope you are all safe!

I think Greycloud's idea of wet towels is a good one. The water will keep the smoke from penetrating the towels too much which should help.

I hope you guys are OK up there. I've been watching this fire spread with growing concern. You guys aren't used to that sort of thing up there, are you?

Stay safe!

Actually the area around me is almost totally forest for hundreds of miles so every year there are a couple forest fires but this one is different, it's huge over 60,000 acres and growing. Our city is in it's direct line and the winds are not helping.

Thanks for the advice everyone. let's hope I won't have to use it.

I can only imagine how that's affecting the poor wildlife, especially the wild birds :(

Wet towel like greycloud suggested is the perfect idea! I hope everything goes well for you guys!!!

The effects of wildfires are devastating. In Arizona they are a yearly occurrence and sometimes huge. Last year the "Monument Fire" destroyed over 60 homes.

I would recommend taking the advise given above and high tail it out of there until the fire is under control.

good luck and stay safe.
