Yesterday I was doing some supply shopping in Petco. I only go in there for supplies, never to buy pets. I decided to go check out the birds. There was a whole line of conures, mostly green cheeks. They sell the green cheeks for about 350, not to bad considering the ones they have are hand fed and socialized. Then I get to the end and there's a normal, healthy looking green cheek. There was a nice big sign on there taped saying that the green cheek needs to go and then they said it was 50% off. I got mad and calmy asked the store's bird "spe******t" why he was on sale? Apparently, according to the associate, and I quote "He's so stupid, the thing just sits there and does nothing. He's been here for 5 months and nobody wants him, so he needs to go." And apparently nobody wanted to buy him because of his 1/2 price, thinking he might be a sickly bird, but he really isn't. I got permission to hold him and a few of the other green cheeks. I was able to get the conure to nicely step up and it even knew how to say hello, pretty boy, and how are you. The thing was sooo friendly and gentle. Compared to the other green cheeks, he was acually smarter and more playful. Then I calmly went to the manager and explained everything to him. The bird "spe******t" got into trouble and the green cheek was brought back to full (and fair) price :) And I got a free $25 gift card for helping out.

LOL, I wanted too but I can't bring in another bird at the moment, LOL. But also my problem was what the bird "spe******t" said about him. And he calls himself a spe******t? The guy didn't even know that there were different types of conures.

A free $25 gift card, that is unacceptable, I would have bargained for the bird :p
Just joking, your parents would not be to thrilled with another bird.

Eh, $350 for a "normal" (non mutation) green cheek is really not reasonable. I cringe every time I see the prices at Petco. I got Cody, which is a yellow sided green cheek, from a really good breeder for $275. He was hand raised as well. Yellow sided gcs at Petco are $400. 50% off was actually what that gc at the pet store SHOULD be. I hate pet stores... (well, chains anyway).

Gosh, that makes me so angry.

A bird isn't stupid if it just sits there. It's either bored, or just different from the other birds. Some spe******t he is. I wonder how long that poor baby sat in Petco waiting for a new home. :(

I see poorly managed and even sick birds sitting in Petco. It's so heartbreaking. I've never had the guts to say anything, so good for you. I'm so glad you stepped up for the bird.

Well, staff at these type stores are usually not paid very well...so I suppose they are not all that knowledgeable. Probably no training as such either...

They shouldn't be selling livestock at pet stores period. It makes me soooo mad

I think AP you and Ratzy should get together and go on a pet store tour putting them all in thier place

Thans guys!! I actually want a job at Petco so I can introduce a change. A change that will completely alter how petco cares for it's pets. They take decent care of all the parrots except for the parakeets and cockatiels. I was cringing just looking at them. They use very small fishtanks to keep the parakeets and cockatiels in. In the fishtank with the parakeets. There were 30 of them and it was a small short tank with no room for them to flut around or climb, and a lot of them looked like that had mites, and I know because S'mores fought mites a year ago. Same way for the tiels.
A few weeks ago, I saw somebody ask to get a cockatiel. The bird spe******t took a towel and without the cockatiels seeing him, he jammed his hand in the tank, forcibly grabbing him, poor thing, and gave all the other tiels massive scares. Then he put the tiel in a box, gave it to the person. When the person walked to look at cages, I spoke to her and told her everything. She changed her mind about buyin the tiel and told the guy to put it back. She then said to me that she was grateful I stepped in and she will look for a breeder. I told her I'd help her out and we exchanged e-mails. I found her a breeder, helped her get started. Now, she has a healthy tiel living a life of peaceful bliss and she thanked me greatly. That just goes to show that you sohludn't be afraid to speak up or help. Not to insult or critisize anyone, but those of you who see birds or other animals in stores living in horrible conditions, SPEAK UP!!! You'll benefit the birds (and other animals) and the people who might buy them!

Awww, you really should have brought the bird home...
