I was oiling up Sammy's feet I noticed he has chewed off a lot of the scales
on both, is this a problem or normal ?

TIA

Not familiar with excessive chewing of foot scales, can you post a picture? I've seen birds often pick at their scales to a very minor degree, almost as if they are grooming.

May I ask what type of oil you use on his feet? Just want to make certain he will not ingest something potentially harmful.

I used coconut oil as posted below in the health section. I only did 1 foot when I noticed this which you can tell in the pic, never seen any sores on these areas and yes he seems to be grooming all the time.

seen the Aviary folks I do business with and was told to keep up the oil on the feet and also in his food daily. I have them doing a housecall on Tuesday to do all my grooming work so will find out more then.

thanks

Thanks for the great picture! I honestly don't see anything abnormal with the scales and feet. The undersides have a different texture and are often discolored.

Any ingestible oil should be great for the feet!

Thanks for the updated pic. Seems to be raw tissue, but haven't experienced anything like that. Perhaps another member will better understand this.

getting him in next week. I have noticed since the intro of the oil in the food and a couple of feet rubdowns he is not picking at them near as much. I have a feeling it is a humidity thing.

humidity was the problem since intro of the oil and a humidifier feet are looking good
new growth on scales and have noticed him a few times a day standing in the water dish getting feet wet, also have noticed less grooming most likely due to less dander.

looks like the Vet is canceled.
