4 yo B&G - Mattie
I have been trying to switch Mattie to Harrison's and she isn't totally resistant but has lately been putting several (4-6) at a time in her water dish. I am frustrated due to the cost and waste. =(

I have tried making it a bit moist for her but then she didn't touch it at all. She will eat a few dry but most of them have been ending up in the water.

My vet recommended giving her seed mix 2X a day for about 15 minutes each, take it out and leave the Harrison's in the rest of the time.

I give her a good variety of fresh daily.

My main frustration is the drowning of the pellets - any suggestions?

Thanks.

Unfortunately parrots will always be wasteful. Moving the water dish to the opposite side of the cage may help to slow her down lol Often times parrots will often dunk parrots to soften them.

How long have you been trying to transfer Mattie? It took my galah, Rosie, 6 months to be completely switched over. You may want to buy some Harrison's birdie bread, and add some pellets into the mix before baking. There's also other recipes for making birdie bread at home. Try to avoid any corn bread with sugar.

Hope that helps some :)

My amazon likes to dunk his Harrison's pellets in water as well. I solved that problem by installing a Lixit water bottle.

Mine also dips pellets in the water. He'll still eat them unless he drops them all the way in. We're about to switch to harrisons as well-or at least mix it with what we currently use. I cringe at the cost especially because he likes to throw food..but I think it will be good for him!

What about moistening the pellets with fruit juice????

What about trying a different size of pellets????

What about making birdie bread and using pellets/crushed pellets as an ingredient?
