Truth in House Painting Safety

Hello All,

Gettin' up against it for bringing home our young Eclectus. We put first deposit down on him in early Feb, he's about 5.5 months old now and already bridge-trained and speaking on command from the time we've spent with him at the shop. That said, his time boarding is starting to wind down / the shop's patience (though they've been absolutely lovely!), and we've moved into our new home (the reason we hadn't taken him home yet, natch).

The fiancee is wrapping up a painting project using limited coats of Behr ultra premium "zero-VOC / low odor" acrylic paint+primer-in-one. There are VERY mixed messages about what exactly is the safety zone here, ranging from veterinarians on some parrot sites saying "if you use zero-VOC it's safe to even paint in the room with them" to others saying "I wouldn't bring my bird in the house for a month!" Enough of a career with animals tells me the latter is a bit of hyperbole, but I don't know how much the former is.

IN terms of his development, it's well past time for him to come home to what will be his stable, daily environment. Looking for serious input here, *especially* from people with direct experience doing some house painting in and around their birds' living areas.
