Ollie has been on Tropican Lifetime Formula since I got him 6 months ago. I have tried to switch him to other pellets but no luck. Is this an okay pellet to just keep him on? I'm having a hard time feeding him veggies lately. He'll eat some fruits but I know it's not enough. I'm going to try bird bread next. Also, he has some stress marks on his feathers that have been there since he's a baby and hasn't lost them but he's done some molting and they're still there and I hope he just hasn't molted those yet. He hasn't gotten new flight feathers yet because he's clipped I would know. I still worry about the stress marks though. Any advice about the pellets would be appreciated...I know they aren't organic but he lives them.

Bump. I'd appreciate any advice.

Check the ingredients on the package label noting the general location of Sugar and Salt (also check for their other names). If you're goal is to simply switch to a Human Grade Pellet, by finding one with a like placement of Sugar and Salt (the percentage), you will find it much easier to make the switch. With time, work the offered pellet to lower levels of Sugar and Salt. Always remember to keep dry foods frozen until ready for use.

Stress marks (bands) occur at the point of the event during the growth of the feather. The longer the event or events, the more Stress marks (banding). That feather will remain until its designated replacement time, regardless of its appearance.

The replacement of feathers with young Parrots come in fairly large groupings, and as they age, the replacement becomes more consistent over time. What is driving the early molts is the transition from a feathering group (colors) that 'hide' the chick to one that states the species that the Parrot is part of.

There is sugar and salt in it but it's far down on the list. I couldn't quite understand what you meant Sailboat. Is that okay or do I have to switch to make sure he's at top health?

I feed my GCC the same thing because that's what he was weened onto from the place I got him. I read that Harrison's and Roudybush are supposed to be the best in quality, but from what I could find people also like Hari's Tropican because there are not awful fake colors in there, making it the best non-organic option. I'm a newbie though, so don't take my word for it. After Yoda finishes his first bag of food, I might try Harrison's or Roudybush to see if he would like some other option. I'm guessing variety is good?

He also gets 2-4 nutriberries per day and a little of whatever veggies we are eating added to his dish. He loves carrots and tomatoes especially!

The further down the list the less of that item as a percentage of the overall mixture. The vast majority do not provide actual percentage of overall volume, which allows them to play marketing games and keep the consumer guessing. It's just the way the game is played.

So, the closer to the bottom Sugar and Salt is the better for your Parrot. High loads of sugar can make a fairly standard Hormonal period with a sugar high. No fun!

As covered above, avoid coloring! It adds nothing and can result in false runs to the Vet when your little darling elects only to eat one color Pellet today. There you are staring at pooo the color of blood or whatever color was eaten.

Yes, I said it already: Keep Dry Foods Frozen until ready to provide.

Hope that this helped!

Okay so it sounds like Ollie should be fine with these pellets. No one sort of said "OMG switch now you terrible bird owner what's wrong with you?!" So that's good. I did not know I needed to keep them in the freezer. I have had an unopened bag for 2 months that has been out. Should I throw that away or is it okay because it hasn't been opened? I have been keeping pellets in an airtight container in the bird closet. What can happen to them if not frozen? Also, do I keep the container in the freezer and feed him cold ones or is it okay to leave some out of used "soon"?
