My Bourke's Parakeet has been very sick recently (pasting of the vent, lethargic, sleeping all day, puffing up, etc). I'm very worried about her... I'm also worried that whatever she has could be contagious to my other birds. I called to make an appointment with an avian vet and they fit me in to later this afternoon.

I'm just wondering how I should transport her and still manage to keep her warm? I have a small travel cage that I'm using as a hospital cage for her now. How can I keep the travel calm with no stress to her? Any tips would be really appreciated.

Thanks :)

I'm sorry your little one is sick. The travel cage sounds perfect to transport her. I would put a soft folded towel in the bottom and cover it with white paper towels (vets usually appreciate the paper towels, it makes it easier to examine a fresh poop sample). It's really important she doesn't get chilled, I would warm up the car and cover her cage while out in the weather.

I hope the vet visit goes well and your Bourke's doesn't have anything serious or contagious. Please keep us updated.

I am so sorry your baby is sick:( We just took Phoe to the vet last week, and it was super cold out. We did what Allee mentioned, and also put a towel in the dryer for a few minutes, and then wrapped it around the outside of the carrier. It stayed nice and warm in the carrier:)

Hi everyone, I took your advice and she was very comfortable on the trip there. She was put in an incubator when we got there. The vet told me she was very ill (and very thin - keel bone was jutting out) and there was faint traces of blood in the urine which I did not notice. The vet told me I had the choice to start intensive treatment or euthanize her because the prognosis was very poor. She thinks that there was something internally wrong with her.

While I was making the decision, the vet went to the back to check on the bird and give her a calcium shot. My poor Posy started regurgitating and then passed on. I am heart broken.

I am paying $400 for a necropsy. I have other birds so I really want to figure out what was wrong so my other birds can get tested.

Very sad day. :(

Oh I am so sorry to hear this Violette :(. What a stressful situation... the sadness and then the concern for your other birds. I do hope for the best, and that the necropsy gives the information that you need.

Very sorry to hear this, Violette. It is so heartbreaking to receive such a prognosis from the vet and have a traumatic ending. I hope you are able to remember the many good times with Posy.
