ok so i have started some intence training with my little buddies, and all going well, but at the moment i only sunslower seeds. they love them and prince will do almost anything for one (sadly when i got prince he was on a sunflower seed diet).

they dont get seed in their diet very often, occasionally i will add half a teaspoon to the fruit and veg mix.

what seed/ nut coukd i use for training treats.

at the moment they wont do anything with out a treat, i try and prince gets cranky and wont do another till he gets his treat.

prince is loving training at the moment so need something he can have lots of.

thanks in advance for your suggestions.

salt free Pecans, walnuts, pistachios are all good alternatives. Organic is fantastic. I slice one into small bite size pieces, that way I don't accidentally overfeed Rosie. I don't know how much fat a Alexandrine should get so you may be able to give more. Another good training treat is pasta. Fruits also work if they are willing to take it. Rosie loves banana.

When I train Rosie I use a bunch of different things and put them all together in a 2 bowls(one dry one wet). That way she she is excited to see what type of treat she will be getting.

i was thinking pine nuts?? i dont know if my guts like them tho as i havent tried them on them.
they love peanuts, they get about 2 a day in their shell and go crazy for them but i think they just enjoy cracking them as i fond the nuts all over the floor.

Oh yeah, I forgot pine nuts. They are a good training treat too.

Peanuts aren't a good treat, they aren't true nuts and don't have the same benefits. Studies have also shown they shouldn't be fed. here are two articles one two

I've heard scary stories about peanuts. I know the shells is kind of toxic to parrots, but not very sure about the actual nut. I personally don't feed peanut because I don't want to risk it.

Anyway, I give Ozzie all short of treats for training. Alexandrine can have a bit more fat in their diet than some other species, so as long as you don't over feed nuts, it's actually very healthy.

Here's a list of common treats I use -

Sunflower seed
Dried apple
Banana chip (I usually use this at the end of each training as it takes a while for Ozzie to finish it)
Different nuts
Pasta
Dried grape
Cheerios
Fruit loops (Ozzie's fav)
Fresh fruits
Fresh vegetables
Dried corn
Coloured pellets
Little bits of seed bells
Rice crackers
Unsalted popcorn
Healthy 100% grain cookies

And every now and then, I also make birdie bread and birdie cookies, and I use that as reward treats as well.

You can use any healthy parrot safe food as treats, as long as it works for you and your alexs :)
