Hi all,
So our new CAG, Baby Girl, has been with us for 3 weeks now. She came to us quite shy and reserved, but she's been opening up more and more everyday. She is a typical Grey (as far as I've read, because she's our first Grey) as far as being skeptical and cautious of every new thing she sees. But I have been using my Pionus, Jewel, to introduce things to (such as toys, new cage, bird house, food), while Baby is watching. Jewel and I are very bonded and she trusts me to pretty much shove toys in her face (not really shove, but not dance around it like some birds need) and she'll check them out and dig into them right away. She hopped right onto the new cage, and went inside a bird house with no hesitation. So Baby watches Jewel and I, and then Baby takes to the new "items" right away too! I move slower on the introductions with her, such as it may take a few more minutes than with Jewel. But no 'setting it in the room and fiddling with it for days' by showing her my interest in the toys. She must trust Jewel's assessment. We've introduced 3 new toys in the last week, a new cage, along with added ropes and toys to the play stand. Plus a new "bird house" I got for her. She won't go inside yet, but she'll go by it and not freak out. Within a couple minutes of intros Baby will touch the item. THIS IS SO EXCITING TO ME! Baby is also watching our GCC Charlie take bathes in his water dish, and now she's trying to do the same, so I got her a 40 oz water dish, so she's trying to get clean for the first time in 4 years. This is also very exciting to me! THEN I spent 2 days (from start to finish) showing her how Jewel and Charlie are trained to go potty on command, and then trying it with her and by the end of the 2nd day this sweet girl is potty trained! I'm just beaming over here and had to share!! I certainly can't take all the credit, I know I couldn't have done it without Jewel and Charlie helping to teach Baby the ropes. She's talking like crazy, and making fun noises. We contact call each other from around the house all day long. And it's cute little noises and phrases that we communicate with, no screaming. I just love it!!! Wyatt just loves her so much. Actually she's really got everyone she meets in awe with her. If every bird was this easy and sweet, I'd have a house FULL of birds!! (My husband might kill me, lol) But I know a big part of Baby's nature is from the efforts put in by her previous person. She did such a wonderful job with her, and worked thru (what I think is) the hardest parts. We were so fortunate to find this Fantastic girl! Having Baby around had actually helped Jewel and I bond even closer, and build even more trust. Love that too! And Charlie likes to talk and make noise with Baby. Charlie is also bonding a bit (in small increments) with my youngest Levi. I just love my life. <3
UPDATE ON WYATT: We're actually at his last chemo session today, we'll be here a couple of days as it makes him quite sick. But about 3 weeks from now we go in for a scan with high hopes of hearing the cancer is gone. It's our light at the end of the tunnel! I'll let everyone know the outcome.
Here's a link to my pics... Hope it works, this is my first time using this.
