Training Conure - Help/Tips Appreciated

Question... Is it possible to train your Green Cheek Conure to fly, and come back to you on command? I'm quite sure it is.. however I have never trained any of my birds in 'Free Flight' but I would like to start, and with my 4 month old Green Cheek Conure Sepha.

If someone has the time and will, it would be fantastic to have almost a step by step description of how to to do the Flight Training.

Help is MUCH appreciated!

EDIT: Her wings are slightly clipped but they are growing out again and I intend on leaving them unclipped.

Yes, you can even train a budgie or canary to fly to you on command.

But I cannot recommend free flying a green cheek. Flying indoors is fine, but free flight(flying outside without any restraint) is very risky with such a small bird. Lots of predators will go after a green cheek.

Ah, yes I see your point and must agree. I take her outside quite often with me, but only when she is wearing her Aviator Harness. So, perhaps I could 'semi-free flight train her? so she can have a good fly around on a long line (in a large open space) and come back to me on command perhaps..?

Flying on a Aviator is a great way to get your bird out to fly while keeping them near you so you can scare away any predators.

Kinny there is actually a member on here that has a sun conure who he free flights outside! However he is in new zealand.. But he flies around outside, comes back to him, and just chills outside on his big aviary! haha

Of course it is risky, but its possible!

Just depends on your area if you have predators and such!


Definitely start training inside, getting her to fly to you inside, then get the harness and start flying outside!

Oh wow! Haha.. just chilling casually I'm not sure I could ever do the harness-less flight training.. Too many nasty huge dogs in my area. :S And a huge black pitbull x that's getting close to knocking our fence down. -_- Not to mention the MASSIVE karrawong/currawong that's been hanging around.
