Not sure if this is the right place to post this for a starter. Sorry if its not!!

Anyway this idea/question comes from one of my horses. I have a 4yo (horse) who as a 2yo would paw in the wash bay and to make him stop i would aim the hose at his face as most horses dont enjoy that! Well turns out Mitch does enjoy it, he LOVES it and so now he paws in the wash because he learnt it would mean i would squirt his face! Its actually very cute when he plays with the hose but i guess my point is that i unintentionally taught him to do it. Birds are very clever. Has anyone had a similar situation with their burdys where, without realizing it at the time, you have taught them something amusing?

I think your example is why they advise against negative reinforcement of any kind. Not only can the "deterrent" turn out to be not only ineffective but an incentive, it can also result in them still doing whatever-it-is but just doing it when you aren't watching, or learning to fear you.

My caique chews on my shirt sometimes, and for a while I got in the habit of absent mindedly pushing her away, but it turned out she loved wrestling with my hand...now she chews on my shirt even more :p Like strudel said, this is one reason negative reinforcement isn't the best :D
