The other night I had an idea for a toy/perch. I make a lot of hemp jewelry and I was thinking, you know those spiral rope perches? Here's an example Perches & Swings: Parrot Fever
I was thinking, I could take some kind of sturdy yet bendable metal wire, bend it into a spiral, and then knot the very thick hemp rope around it, the same way that I make my bracelets. It would completely hide the wire and I think it would look really neat, and since hemp is pretty cheap, I think I could make quite a few of them for what it would cost to buy one from the store. We actually have this lamp that kind of sucks, it keeps blowing light bulbs. It is all metal and sort of in the shape of a lower case "t" with the bulb fixture at the end of one of the arms for the "t". Sorry, that's probably confusing, but I don't have my camera right now so I can't take a picture. I was thinking about removing the fixture and all of the wires and then making one of these spiral perches and hanging it down through the hole where the fixture was attached. It is a black stand and I think it would look really nice with a natural hemp colored perch hanging from it, something that I could put in our living room and not have it be this rainbow colored isor. The only thing I am trying to figure out, is what kind of metal would be safe and good to use? I was originally thinking of using a coat hanger, it seems like it would be the perfect combination of strength and pliability, but not being able to know for sure exactly what kind of metal it is scares me. I don't think she would actually chew it to the point that the metal would ever be exposed(she's not really a big chewer) but I don't want to take the chance, just in case she would, I want to know that it won't hurt her. Any ideas?
