Buzz is supposed to be going to camp again with us this year in mid-July. Last year was great, he learned lots of new sounds and talked to everyone who walked by but he still had a light clip which has grown out. This year I told my son after his recent flying escape that I didn't want him to go without a clip. Way too scary to even contemplate! The AV is almost 2 hours away from home but from camp it only 30 minutes. So I originally thought I would just take him for a clip the first day of camp - a nice and easy trip for ME. But then I started wondering about him. He will be in his travel cage and his person (my son) won't have much time to spend with him or be able to go with him to his clip. Is that putting my not wanting to drive in Michigan tourist and construction ahead of what is best for Buzz? Does that sound overly stressful?

I guess that would really depend on Buzz and what would stress him out the most. On the one hand, it might be easier for him with the way you planned. It will mean less overall time for him spent traveling since you would only be heading out that way once instead of twice if you were to get him clipped ahead of time. Also, if he really enjoyed gong camping, it may provide a distraction for him to get over the stress of going to the vet quicker.

However, if he gets majorly stressed by going to the vet, then you think the excitement of gong to camp may be too much for him on top of it, you may want to take him ahead of time. It really all depends on him, and you know him better than we do, so you know how he would feel in each situation more than we would.

is there a reason he couldn't use a harness? No worry about him flying away and no need to go to the vet :)

I wouldn't let him out even with a clip. They can still fly in open air with a clip, it's only meant to stop them crashing into walls inside. If there's enough updrift/wind he could be off.

Better to get him harness trained, then he can go out and even have a flutter around safely

He is my son's bird. If I touch I get bitten so the harness isn't a possibility. He will step up for me and behave as long as I don't touch. He would be going with us so that he can see my son during the week although usually only once a day. The clip would be mainly in case he escapes.

Outlaw - as far as stress he is more stressed when left alone which is part of the reason he is coming with us. My husband will be home with the birds that don't mind having less interaction. My main concern is my son is always with him for physical reassurance at the vet, I can't do that without a bite.

Does he do well in the car and carrier? I think I'd wait until you were on your way..one trip then to the doc's and then to camp. Once he gets to camp I bet he'll forget all about the bad stuff.

You could bring him in the carrier, no clip, and bring a harness for your son to put on him once he gets there?

It's awful risky letting a bird with no harness and no clip just hang out in the open, you could be saying goodbye to your grey if you attempted to bring him.
