Cockatiel named Cassie
I need...tips! Haha. I'm getting a cockatiel in a little more then a week. I know stuff about them, and I've babysat this bird before and we get along. I'm printing out stuff about birds but I'd really like some quick tips from bird owners first hand! Thanks!!!!:blue2:

If you pet sat for her and she's comfortable with you then I wouldn't worry to much. Just cruise the cockatiel section of the forums and look what others advise. Cockatiels are pretty smart, and like attention, so long as you can provide that your golden.

really, making it up as you go along is a good way to go! You adapt to them. Just remember they're stubborn, only respond to positive stuff and just need a little more attention than other pets.

Just read through the forums, it's amazing how much you learn by just seeing stuff on here. Simple summary of how fast you can learn is back when I first appeared here all I knew of birds was the old-school seed water cage system

Thanks guys! Cassie and I did get along well. Hopefully everything works out. Thanks for the links! And thanks for the encouragement!!

Cockatiels are amazing little creatures. I never thought about having one, until I read up about them on this wonderful and informative forum..I have always been "owned" by large parrots

BB came home to live with me and Amy when he was just a baby at 4.5 months old. Out of the 4 or 5 baby 'tiels the breeder had,Beebs was the one who chose ME, by jumping right on to my hand and demanding head skritches :) I knew then and there he was the one!

You get back what you put into it,just like any relationship. But with parrots in general, they will give back 10x what you give them!

I know my "little boy...little boy" ( that's what he calls himself to me lol) loves me with his whole little heart! He sings at the top of his air sac every norning when I come home from work..he runs TO ME if I'm out of his line of sight, doing his flock calls. He will sit on my shoulder for hours, with his little beaky gently pressed against my cheek, while he serinades me with his songs.

He is also VERY smart! I am amazed on what he has learned. He talks well for a little guy..he wolf whistles as soon as he see's his Uncle DJ or Uncle Joe or Uncle David ( everyone is "uncle" to him lol)

His talking is pretty darn good too! He says HELLO but ONLY first thing in the morning..his favorite words are "little boy..little boy" " BB good boy" calls himself "Beebers"
He can whistle the Andy Griffith theme and Addams Family theme..mixing the two together lol. He has made his own special music. I can whistle a part of one of those theme songs and stop..and he'll pick up from where I left off,the he'll stop..and I continue lol...it's a game we play.

Some folks say Cockatiels aren't cuddly..BALONEY! I can cup my hand around him and smother him in kisses, stroke his back, rub his beaky, give him head skritches etc etc..

Ok I'll stop bragging now! But I think you get the picture :)

BUT..as previously mentioned..YOU GET BACK WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT!
Do not expect miracles if you don't take the time with Cassy! and good luck!

I actually thought I'd never have a tiel but I decided to buy one on impulse one day and I've grown very attached to her since! She is currently preening my beard and asking for scratches! I just love the interaction she gives me daily. I'd say tiels are now in my top 3 favorite breeds. Being a girl, she doesn't talk but after several months I finally got her to wolf whistle and she whistles the phrase "baby bird" if that makes sense. she mimics what I say in whistle form! and she loves to chew on my shoes. When she hears me coming downstairs she hollers and hollers and hollers till I appear, then she begs me to let her out. I just love her so much, I know you will become as attached as I am because tiels are just so great. Good luck to you two! Share lots of pics!

My tip that I think most important.
If you are going to let your cockatiel fly please be careful of Windows.
Tiels can fly very fast and will head strait for any window that is big enough for them to "fly through"

Cover your windows with blinds or curtains. put on stickers. They learn quickly but you don't want them to learn the "hard way"

When I was first looking into getting a bird, it was budgie until my little guy waddled up to the pin looking up with his little beetle eyes. At times it can just be love at first sight and it's a great idea letting the bird choose you. Tiels are sociable and love attention (which means can be easily spoiled) once proven one is worthy. It's trial and error in most cases, but providing the basics of a good sizable cage, a good diet, exercise and love and care means a good and loving sweet tiel! They don't ask for much but give a lot.

They are great joys to have and give so much back! A quick search and scrolling through the tiel forums should provide you with all you need as well as the members on the forum. Enjoy your little tiel, the forum and take lots of pics.

That is absolutely amazing! That bond you must have....its incredible! I didn't know tiels could talk! What an amazing cockatiel....he sounds so smart and sweet. Please Private Mesage me and tell me more! Thanks for sharing that.

I'll be sure to watch the windows! I actually have blinds, so, I'm sure it'll be ok. Thanks, y'all!!!! You've been really helpful!!

I love cockatiels! My Ducky is affectionate, loves attention, is smart and eager to please, and is an excellent flier. I know that many male cockatiels whistle but for some reason mine does not. Tiels are absolutely adorable, you will fall in love with them!!
